Reboot and select proper boot device error.

My hard disk crashed a week back and so i got it replaced but now when i try installing an OS i get the error "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key".
I have never had this problem before.

I've set proper boot device priority..my hdd and dvd rom both get detected in BIOS. I cant figure whats the problem?! Can anybody please help me?:cry:

I tried resetting the CMOS from BIOS and by removing the battery..SATA is configured to "SATA and IDE combined mode" by default..i tried AHCI but didnt help. BIOS detects the HD but the first thing that happened after i installed and started my pc was the error :(..
Dont understand what to do?! :cry:

Can you install any other OS to the HD? What error does that give?
 
No i cant..i tried XP n Windows 7..both the cds are bootable and work fine on other pc..i get the same error all the time "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key."

Also tried using an old 40 gb IDE hd i have..same problem..

Check for a newer BIOS version for your mobo on manufacturer's Support Downloads webpage for your model computer or mobo.

Do you have a floppy in the boot order? Remove it completely.

Remember that WIn7 installer is a DVD, not CD, so set DVD drive first to boot.

Try switching SATA ports for DVD drive, then HD. Check all cable connections carefully, swap cables.

Or is DVD drive IDE? How is it jumpered?

Do you have another DVD drive to try?

What are the other choices for your SATA controller?
 
Yes theres floppy in boot order even though i dont have floppy installed..yes i tried using a different cd rom but it didnt work..i tried it with XP as its a cd.
Dvd rom is the 1st priority..
I tried switchin the ports..both hard disk and dvd rom are SATA..the options i have for SATA controller are AHCI,
RAID,
SATA and IDE combined.

Disable the floppy both in Boot order and wherever else it appears in BIOS.

How about trying another DVD drive?

Normally the error message means HD is disabled or disconnected so reinstall it and check its connections carefully so that it gets correctly initialized. If you just bought it new, then use included Tech Support to walk you through correct install.

I realize you tried another IDE HD and got the same error so that seems to narrow it to controller, since these have different cabling.

Hopefully others will pitch in.
 
I will try the usb stick and let u know what happens. I have checked the data cables and they work fine.

I tried using the USB stick by following the steps on the link u gave me. Everything happened as its stated but when i tried installin OS from the usb pendrive nothin happens. PC gets stuck at "press del to enter setup, press tab to display bios post message" screen.

I have set USB disk as 1st priority device. Can there be somethin wrong with the hardware? May be wid the Motherboard? :(

I took my CPU to a friends place and figured out that there is somethin wrong with my dvd drive:o. But why cant i boot using the pen drive? it boots in my friend's pc..if that could work i could have an OS runnin..thanx a lot greg..

Does the stick show up on one-time Boot Menu accessed by tapping key given on first bootup menu? Sometimes it is listed under Hard Drives. It should make itself apparent there and on the BIOS boot order menu once plugged in but not always under the USB listing.

Try install to your HD in your friend's computer with his HD's unplugged. I do this when I dont' have time to troubleshoot problem install, and so far it has worked every time - swapping out drivers and requesting several restarts when returned to problem machine.

Then when you have it setup as you like save a Win7 backup image externally so you never have to reinstall. You will need a bootable Repair CD, tho, which also can be put on stick.
 
I bought a new dvd drive and installed windows. I will go through the link u gave me, thank you very much Greg:)
