I recently built a new PC, and when I go to install windows 7 from a boot disk, it gives me a "reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media and press any key". I can get into the bios and everything, it just will not boot into windows setup! Please help!

System specs:
i7 4770k
MSi Z78-G43
Intel 60gb SSD
Crossfire'd Radeon 7850s
8gb Vengance RAM
650W power supply

If you need anymore info, just ask. Anything to help fix the problem!
Also, SSD is brand new with nothing on it and I have it set to boot from the cd drive in the BIOS

If you have the Original copy that would be the best deal

Sometimes bootable disc don't work well have you tried to copy it to usb stick and boot ?

No, it still gives me the same error. It won't even boot from the usb. Could it be a faulty mobo?

Where did you get Win7? Is it a store bought disk? Have you set DVD drive to boot first as shown in How to Boot A Computer from CD or DVD - YouTube? "Do you get prompt to Press any Key to boot disk?"

If not try another ISO for your licensed version, burned to disk or written to stick from Steps 1 and 2 of Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 (same for retail) which steps will also help you get and keep a perfect install.

If disk and flash stick written from new ISO with tools provided fail, reset BIOS to defaults, set HDD to boot first, make sure SATA controller is set to AHCI, then try triggering the installer media with the one-time BIOS Boot Menu key given on first screen? Any response?

The CD is a copy of an original. I'm trying to install windows 7 on a new hard drive, in a newly built computer and it won't go past the 'Reboot and select proper boot device' error. Usb nor dvd works.

Tried that, no luck. I formatted an old hdd and tried using that, but it still won't register it. Do I need to take it somewhere? If so, where?

Welcome THEDARKLORD,
You've built a killer new rig. Posting this in Installation and Setup would have been better place to post for future threads picking the most applicable place is always best. Have you tried unplugging all sata devices but the optical and your target SSD? Then have you set up the SSD as a AHCI drive in the bios?

Unplug all other HD's and peripherals,

Boot into BIOS setup, reset to defaults, save changes. (If an EFI BIOS you'll need to decide if you want UEFI BIOS vs. Legacy BIOS. If UEFI follow these special steps for Install, otherwise enable Legacy BIOS or Compatibility Support Module to proceed with normal install.) Set DVD drive first to boot, HD second, set SATA controller to AHCI, Save changes and Exit.

Then boot into Windows 7 installer DVD or flash stick burned or written using tool and latest ISO for your licensed OS version here. Your installer is suspect so try a new ISO using both methods.

At first installer screen Press Shift + F10, or enter System Recovery Options to open a Command Box, type:

DISKPART
LIST DISK
SELECT DISK 0 (after confirming Windows 7 target HD #)
CLEAN
CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY
FORMAT FS=NTFS LABEL="WINDOWS 7"
ACTIVE
EXIT
EXIT

Next click Install Now, then Custom install to Clean Install Windows 7 to the partition you created. If it fails then report back at which step and the verbatim error message.

In addition read over these steps to understand the tools and methods which work best to get and maintain a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7. The steps are the same for retail.

After install you can adjust partition size or Create new partitions for data, etc. in Disk Mgmt. You are creating the partition here for the purpose of wiping the HD and marking Active which overcomes certain install failures.

@linnemeyerhere yeah, that is all I have plugged in.
And @gregrocker, I can't get it to boot into the windows 7 installer. It goes from the bios, then the cd drive spins up and the screen goes black and it says "Reboot and select proper boot device or input boot media and press any key to continue." If I press a key, it just says the message again.

Check your optical sata and power cables for all connections and also try a new sata cable. If your bios controls the sata headers could the cable be in a header that's disabled? Connect the SSD to sata header 1 (6gb) and optical in header 2. You are close to getting this sorted but I'm hoping the optical isn't bad. Was the optical from a previous build and working fine or is it brand new?

It's probably less confusing to request this this thread be moved to installation than to end up with two threads on the same subject.

@THEDARKLORD, your specs say you have win 7 starter 64bit, first, there is no 64bit starter and it only comes preinstalled on OEM computers.

If you are trying to install this on a custom build you are breaking the EULA.

Windows 7 StarterWindows 7 Starter is the edition of Windows 7 that contains the fewest features. It is only available in a 32-bit version and does not include the Windows Aero theme. The desktop wallpaper and visual styles (Windows 7 Basic) are not user-changeable. Microsoft originally intended to restrict users of this edition to running three simultaneous applications but this limitation was dropped.[6]This edition is available pre-installed on computers, especially netbooks, through system integrators or computer manufacturers using OEM licenses.[1][7][8]

Do you have access to another machine with an optical to see if it prompts to load the OS on it? Of course don't click through any actions as this is just a test of the OS disk itself.

Confirm that you tried another ISO for your licensed version, burned to DVD and then if necessary written to stick using tool from link I gave you.

Good catch, Derek: Why is Starter in your Specs? That is not licensed for use on a new build. Where did you get Win7 and how do you plan to activate it?

I have no idea. Its just a disk that a friend copied and gave to me. Is it really relavent to the topic, because i've used the disk before and it works fine. And yes, the cd drive works. It's like the mobo recognizes the ssd and cd drive but won't let itself boot.

And nothing has worked so far.

Yes it is relevant if you want help.

You need to have a legal copy of Windows for help to proceed.

At least do some research, there is no such thing as a Starter 64bit...:sarc:
