recdisc.exe fails ! Win 7 pro 64 bit.

I can find it in the command line, and "execute" it, but it "stops working" . Click on check on -line for a solution and close program - returns Nothing. Multiple times - same results.

Could this be related to some of the 59 failed recommended Win 7 updates that showed up the first time I fired this thing up?

Also tried via Dell's backup and restore icon - Need to mount s USB harddrive - doesn't recognize a 26 gig USB thumb drive - No options to burn a CD / DVD.

I did originally make a 3-dvd Image set (at least I now hope that's what I got).

Seems rescue disk kinda handy and I would like to have it before I start installing anything else on this new laptop ( Just AVG and Firefox for now). Help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Have you tried to uninstall the app/program and reinstall it? if not i would try that first and see if that works and we can go from there. Sometimes glitches happen in the install process that ends up complicating things.

New Laptop direct from DELL - Part of a Black Friday + special. Came with Win 7 Pro installed. Other than Firefox and AVG, I haven't installed anything - wanted to wait until I knew I had some basic "control" of the thing before I got too deep into backing things out. So basically, It's as delivered.

Set up 1 user with Administrator rights. I also wanted to re-partition the HDD so that I can put all data and 'stuff' in a separate area to make data backup easier. This should be done before loading anything else.

But right now, can't even do the basic create a system rescue disk. Note - the Dell 'Utility' wants an external HDD on a USB port - not just a 16G thumb drive - but a > 100MB and < 1 TB HDD. (?) Win 7 version just dies, as in original post.

I expected a little better / easier go round.

By the Way - When I first fired it up, there were 60+ "important" updates to download and apply. Most of them failed. about 24 hours of runtime just doing that initial 'update'. Tried picking them off by release date, and that still didn't do much good. How do I know which of those failed updates are really critical??

Its quite possible that since all those windows updates failed on download and install; that the windows update folder may not have installed properly. I would try doing a search for the windows update folder and deleting the folder contents. (this needs to be done with administrator rights i do believe). Then try re downloading the updates.

Matt - searching for "update" folder - no luck !??? They show up in the 'other' window of installed / non installed updates. Current count of 'failed" 220. Do you have the exact path for this folder I'm supposed to clean out? Jeez - this is a pain - Win 7 for Dummies sounds like an option for starters. Thanks, and Happy New Year.
