Solved recent optional ATI update

After installing August ATI driver update (and the other prioritymy system became unstable and would BSOD. After rolling the ATI driver back the system returned to a stable state. Windows 7 home premium 64 bit, 8 gigs, AMD Athlon II X3 450 Rana 3.2GHz Socket AM3 95W Triple-Core Desktop Processor ADX450WFGMBOX,

XFX HD-485X-ZNFC Radeon HD 4850 1GB 256-bit DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP,

ASUS M4A89GTD PRO/USB3 AM3 AMD 890GX SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard

I would be interested if anyone else has had this problem.

First question is, what August update? AMD hasn't released one in August yet and the current driver from them is the July Catalyst 11.7,

of which I haven't seen any reports of BSOD's occurring from. Didn't happen to get it through Windows Update did you? If so do yourself and your computer a favor and the next time you see one offered, set it to hidden and forget about it. For video card updates do not get them through Windows Update and only ever get them directly from the card manufacturer's (AMD or Nvidia specifically, not the respective card makers as all they will have is what AMD and Nvidia have).

stormy13 and fellow connoisseurs of fine graphics cards -

Following the advice so wisely provided, I do agree that one should get the update straight from the proverbial horses mouth, but the same problem reappeared. I do not want to be one who shoots mouth off with out checking so I installed the update (July Catalyst 11.7) right from the AMD/ATI web page. Problem reappeared, so once again I rolled back the display adapter driver to the ATI Technologies Inc., 4/19/2011, ver 8.850.0.0 and the problem went away. I wasn't actually getting BSOD this time I was getting "no video causing my monitor to power down ugly screen". The fan would shift into highest gear and the system would lock up.

To roll back the driver.

I have just rolled back the driver for my XFX HD-485X-ZNFC Radeon HD 4850 1GB 256-bit DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Cardagain. The latest Aug driver cased a black blank screen (BlBlkS).

The driver can be rolled back from the device manager under display adapter. The driver that works for me is the 4/19/2011 8.850.0.0 driver from ATI Technologies Inc.
