Recoginizing backup discs

My hard drive crapped out but I had made backup DVD discs. I replaced the hard drive and put in the first backup disc, set the bios to boot to the ATAPI CD/DVD Drive. The drive spins up but it comes up with "Error cannot recognize disc ...". What am I doing wrong? Thank you.

Going forward, please use usb connected external hard-drive. Considering a backup consisting of a few or several DVDs, one only has to have 1 nonReadable DVD to cancel out all the DVDs of that particular backup.

It seems like all of these answers assume I have some operating system. They are using the control panel and other things. I installed one new blank hard disc. All I can get to is the BIOS or I think it is referred to now as UEFI.

What program did you create the backup DVD discs with ?
If you used the built in Windows program, do you have a Win 7 Installation or Recovery DVD/USB ?
If you do, did you read the tutorial instructions posted by pbcopter in post #2 ?

Yes, I assumed you will eventually have a working OS, that's why I started with: Going forward...and gave a warning note about depending upon DVD backup sets.
