Well, you should try a few oldies and classics of each category... dunno, like DOOM for FPS (the first DOOM), Diablo II for nice addictive hack and slash... maybe Baldur's Gate for RPGs... (back in the era when gameplay and story was important)

Anyhow... you could also try the great weird things like Braid and World of Goo~~

Mario 64 for Platforming, Ocarina Of Time For Strategy, FFVII For RPG, Golden Eye For FPS. Then your done.

This thread is my problem with gaming. I have wanted to get into gaming and every time I try to get advice, one guy tells me "XXXX" and the next guy says "NO NO NO that game sucks....go with "YYYY"" I guess just get one that seems cool and see what I like huh? I am going to build a rig this fall-winter so guess I'll start off with something my new rig can handle and see if I'm a gamer.

Without even knowing which style of game you want to play, that makes it even harder to offer opinions. With such broad requests, obviously there is going to get a lot of varied and differing opinions.

Pretty much all the games mentioned so far are good/ok games in their own right.

But yes, choosing where to start can be difficult ;)

smarteyeball... Took the words right out of my fingers ;)

nate, get some emulators and start playing oldies but goodies like Donkey Kong, Galaga, Centepide, etc, etc :D

I gotta thank whoever recommended GRID, i've never been into racing games, but i just cant stop playing this one! Its seriously a great game.

As others have mentioned Diablo II is one you should play if you havnt already, DIII is commin soon!

I'd recommend F.E.A.R 2 but id say play the first one first if you havnt already.

I just picked up Age of Empires III, if you liked the second one, you might like this one, havnt played too much but its def worth a look from what i've seen.

Fallout 3 if you havnt already as well ;) though i prefer Oblivion.

Well that covers racing, hack and slash, RTS, FPS, and.. F3 roleplaying?

Also, stay away from the MMO's they'll suck you in and you'll be spendin way more money (and time) for what anygame is worth in no time.

As stupid as saints row sounds to me, and i dont like GTA, i heard is good, so if you into that kinda thing, thats one to try out. That and GTA IV i think they're at now.

I've got GTA Vice City, and i like the driving, but all the mindless killing gets boring after a while, havnt touched the game in sooo long.

This is a pretty good thread, im going to try out hawx and dead space :)

Last one i'll add is Devil May Cry 4, absolutly beutiful game.

Merc 2 does look interesting, I'll check it out.

And I just watched [ame="http://www.giantbomb.com/just-cause-2-walkthrough-video/17-791/"]this ridiculous preview[/ame]. You gotta be kidding me. It's like Crysis meets Spiderman Mario Brothers...!
