Solved Recommendation for forum to solve XP problem?

Hi valued 7 users. It's been so long since I had to troubleshoot another OS I don't know the best forums anymore. Any favorite XP forums y'all can recommend?

So, I'll just sneak this in at the risk of committing a 7 forum sin.
My son gave me a hosed non booting XP loaded Asus eee pc 1005HA.Nothing but a blinking cursor, no POST beeps. So I made a Linux bootable flash drive and Puppy Linux. Then after and several menu choices, still with the flash drive, pressing ESC, I found an XP boot option in an advanced boot menu, and voila XP works fine, but only if I boot from ESC and multiple selections. So I need to figure out how to make it boot xp from the HD automatically.

With XP dying soon, I would format it and put ubuntu on windows 7 on it.

Have you checked your bios settings and made sure the HDD is the first boot device?

When I thought XP was dead, I reassigned the SD card as the first boot device and used Linux from there. Then when I found XP would load, I reassigned the HDD back to the first boot device but I was back to the blinking cursor and XP wouldn't boot. Win7 would be nice, but it's only got one gig of RAM. I'm sure that can be upgraded though.

I can't help with booting XP, but it may be using the Linux GGRUB bootloader for XP, which is one way I suppose. :)

Yeah that's all I can figure. I didn't even know that was possible, but it seems to be doing just that. I can live with it, I'm going to look at my Acronis backup. Maybe there's a way to back it up and restore it with a fresh boot sector.

I know you folks are 7 people, so thanks for the interest. I also posted over at Bleeping computer.com. Pretty slow these days, but that was my go-to forum before 7 and this one came along.

GRUB can chainload into NTLDR, at which point NTLDR will take over and boot up Windows XP. GRUB itself cannot directly boot XP however, GRUB simply doesn't know how to handle Windows besides handing control over to NTLDR (for NT4/2000/XP) or BOOTMGR (for Vista/7/8) which do know how to handle Windows.

As for your XP boot up problems, I sadly can't figure out anything with the admittedly obscure information you've provided. Sorry I can't be of much help. :(

Okay, sorry, I thought I had given a good description, especially since my main question was if there is a good XP forum. It was all the information I knew to give.

Anyway, I fixed it. I found a neat little program that will repair the mbr without the XP DVD or the repair console. It's called Fixmbr
Fixmbr - Repair Master Boot Record, MBRFix for Windows 2000, XP etc., fdisk /mbr, linux LILO damage MBR.
