Hello, I just purchased a OCZ Vertex 2 120 GB and was wondering what is the recommended setup for an SSD? I currently have a WD Raptor 300 GB, a older WD 150 GB hard drive and I am using Windows 7 64 bit. Is it recommended to use the SSD just for the Operating System or can you use it for all of your programs?

Hi Teepee,

A 120GB SSD is a nice size. You will able to install the operating system and most programs too. For example, I have a 60GB OCZ Vertex2, and I have this installed:

Windows 7 Ultimate x64
Microsoft Office 2010 Professional (the full suite)
as well as several other programs like 7ZIP, MalwareBytes, IMGBURN etc. etc. etc.

And I still have 35GB free.

You have plenty of space :)

Read this guide by one of our members BFK before you install and setup the SSD:

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/91339-ssd-hdd-optimize-windows-reinstallation.html

Generally, the rule of thumb is to leave about 20% free disk space on the SSD. Post any questions you have, and we can help you out.

Regards,
Golden

You will be the one to answer that question, as it will depend on what apps you plan to install, etc. If they fit easily, there's no reason not to. When I eventuall switch to a 120 GB, I'll probably put my games on a separate drive, but the OS and all apps will go on the SSD.

More or less, it boils down to what you want to start up fast. I keep my apps and such on my SSD (I'm running 80GB intel). My games typically go onto my SSD as well...since they start up so fast and run great from the SSD. I use my regular drive to store internet downloads, music, videos, virtual machines, and my data.

So it is possible to install software and applications on a drive other than the SSD? Is it a pretty straight forward process?

Yes, when you install software, you usually choose customize or change destination path and instead of putting in C:\Program Files, use something like D:\apps...or wherever you decide to store your other applications.

Ok thanks ppparks1. One more question for ya, do you have to have a partition on the drive you want some software or applications?

Of course you have to have a partition. Without a partition on the drive (any partition) you cannot install. But you can use an existing partition and just define a folder.

I never move any programs off the SSD. But I have no games which can be quite large. On one of my laptops I have a 90GB Vertex2 that holds everything - even a virtual Box partition and I stlll have nearly 40GBs free.
