Recording from only 1 application

Is it possible to have multiple applications (playing audio) open, but a recording application (such as audacity) will record from only one of them?

I doubt that you can do that. If there were more than one input to the sound card (or chip) it would combine both inputs (if it can do that) into one output - it can't separate inputs and outputs. And, when you are recording you want "exclusive" use of the sound system for the recording application.
