recover files using chkdsk

I ran chkdsk /X /f on a SD card and it found 139 files. but it couldn't recover them as the SD card was full and there was no space to write them. why was it trying to write the recovered files onto the same drive?
Surely even windows cant be that daft. Is there some way I can tell chkdsk to write the recovered files to a different drive or volume? However it did write 36 damaged files back onto the card with the original filenames. I hope that hasn't made it impossible to recover the rest.

When you run chkdsk using the parameters /x /f, you are asking it to force the volume to dismount first if necessary and then repair the errors on the disk without scanning for any bad sectors.

BTW, /x includes the functionality of /f.

its just that when I ran it said that it had recovered 139 files but couldn't write them to the sd card. so I cant recover them using chkdsk? that's what I want to do. probably I'm using the wrong tool. the trouble is that I don't know the jargon like you do. what does dismount the volume actually mean? when I use a file recover program it usually asks me where I want to put the recovered files. chkdsk doesn't do this?

CHKDSK [Check Disk] is a Windows utility program for detecting and repairing corruptions of the file system.

I assume that you have deleted files that you want to recover, so CHKDSK is definately not what you want.

It will depend on how long ago you deleted the files as to whether or not you will be able to recover all of them. When a file gets deleted, that part of the disk that the file occupies is then made available for new files to be written to!

There are many free recovery programs that will do what you want.

A favourite among members here, myself included, is Recuva => Recuva. The wizard will help you a lot when it comes to recovering your files.

One thing I should have mentioned is DO NOT save anything to the SD card before you have tried to recover the files, this is because it could possibly overwrite a file, or part of a file that you are trying to recover!

thanks for that. no the files weren't deleted but the card was rendered unreadable by a computer glitch.
I have recovered many of the pics but I havnt tried recuva before. the reason I was interested in using chkdsk is that it recovered files that were damaged with the original names and dates. none of my other
attempts with other programs had done that. the files were useless but i did get a message asking me if i wanted to recover the non damaged ones. however it would only write them to the card. that's why i wanted to know if there was a way of telling chkdsk to write them to another directory on the computer
rather than the card.

I also want to recover about 200 pics i deleted off a computer. however a hard drive takes forever to scan, and produces so many 0000s of pics and images it would take the rest of my life to go through. Is there a program where i can specify a search for files with a particular name and date? So instead
of finding every image on a computer it only finds those with the names in the range abc123-333 taken on 25 dec 2016 for example.

You could also try using a Linux LIVE DVD or USB to access the SD card and retrieve the data!

Never tried as I haven't really used safe mode, but will see.

To get into Safe Mode, re-boot the computer and keep pressing the F8 key. Then click Safe Mode and wait for the desktop to appear. You can then navigate to the SD card. Can you see and open the files?

We will see if other options work first before we approach this.

It isn't dangerous, this is the official site => Recuva.

So you mean that whatever it recovers wont be usable?

The files you are trying to recover are NOT system files. CHKDSK is to recover system files, therefore it is not what you need to be using for recovery!

Fist we need to know what you're trying to do.
Tell us the story of the SD. Is it from a camera? Is it formatted as FAT32 or NTFS?
Why did you run check disk?
Check disk won't recover deleted or system files files. It fixes the allocation table (it looks for inconsistencies).

Check Disk or CHKDSK is a system tool that helps to verify the file system integrity of a volume and fix the logical file system errors including bad sectors.

When you run CHKDSK, this utility does whatever it needs to do in order to fix the logical file system. CHKDSK’s attempt to ‘fix’ an issue could also result in data loss. CHKDSK process consists of five stages out of which three are major while two are optional stages. You can also see different stages of CHKDSK when you run the utility in CMD.

Stage 1. Checks and Verify Files
Stage 2. Checks indexes on Volume
Stage 3. Checks Security Descriptors for each Volume
Stage 4. Verification of Data (optional)
