Recover Password in Outlook 2010

my client did a backup of the pst file in outlook 2010.
After the backup he closed outlook then the next day opened it to check his email
It is coming up with a message saying it needs the Password to open the data file
Only he never put a password in it
He says his finger slipped when he was doing it at the point where it asks if you want to password protect it.
I think what happened it put nonsense letters or numbers in and saved that
Now he nor I can open Outlook
is there a way to recover this password without uninstalling the whole office program and reinstalling it?
Repair does not work because there is nothing i guess to repair
You cannot get past this password screen- if you do not put the password in Office 2010 closes

I know of a freeware program that can do it but I don't think we are allowed to indulge such info on the forums ... soz pal

I am desperate
i really do not want to uninstall outlook because he will loose an entire month of data

Robin9, I would guess that your SOL on recovering a .pst with out the password. there might be programs available to be able to but that is not allowed on the Windows 7 forums. Too many times people copy someone elses' file and try to get into it. Just forget getting any help to crack a password here on Windows 7 forums. Not allowed.

I am pretty sure that the Admin's will back me up on that..

At least to get me into outlook so I can import the last month backup that does not have a password

You have a backup .PST file from a month ago, right?
Are the PST Folder Structure and Accounts the same now as they were a month ago?

If you do have a backup .PST file:

• Rename the current PW protected .PST file (add OLD to the file name)
• Copy (Restore) the month old .PST file backup to the same location as the current .PST file
• Open Outlook and see if it uses the month old file correctly

I did notice that in my documents there is a folder called Outlook. Nothing is in there
I made a folder called Outlook Backups. All the backups go in there and are there
There used to be something in the Outlook Folder. I do not understand why it is empty now
If this does not work. Where else does outlook hold the pst files? I did a search in windows 7 and all it showed were the ones in the outlook backup folder

I am wondering if I put last months backup into the Outlook folder if it will see it and pick it up. Or is ther another place outlook puts its pst file

I manually configure where my .PST files are stored, saved, and backed up.
So I'm not sure what Outlook uses as default locations at the moment.
I keep my data in a different partition than the "C: OS" partition...

So do I. That is why I thought this was wierd because even if accidentally you backup the backup with a password this should not effect the program because outlook uses the outlook folder to back itself up and on her machine this folder was empty
But I figured out what she did because I tried your it did not work and that is when I thought something else had to be wrong because that backup had no password She told me when she was working in the program something popped up asking for a password. She assumed this was her email password, so I tried that and it worked but when I went into the program nothing was there except her account info which was very strange. When I tried to send an email I got an error msg that it could not find the account profile. Then I remembered in the outlook folder there was nothing there so it was looking for nothing. But when doing a email test through the account settings it passed. But try to send an email the regular way,,nada
So I deleted the account and made a new one and brought in the week before backup I had done and that had no password That came in fine so basically she lost 1 week of send emails, better than a month
But even though I deleted the first account it is still showing up grey. With the inbox etc
The new account has a (1) in front of it because the email address is the same as the one I deleted
Is there a way to permanently delete that one?

well after playing wit it i figured it out
I was able to remove the first account by going into the control panel- Email but it was asking me for a password again, which now i know what it is but how do i stop it from asking for the email password when outlook first opens, this is the first time I have seen this happen
I had to go into Account Settings , in the data file, click on settings, and put in the old password- leave the new password blank
that did it
