On my Windows 7 Ultimate Sony VAIO laptop, the recovery partition is no longer visible in the boot menu. I am trying to access my recovery because my BD drive will no longer play CD or DVD, and I also want a clean start.

How can I clean install Windows 7 with no drive that is working? Or is the best way to borrow an external drive?

I'm so stuck and really need this sorting because I need my computer for all my work and flight plans.

Thank you to anyone who helps. If you need anymore information then please ask and I will get it on here ASAP.

Sam

Edit: The clean reinstall I want is Home Premium, I've got the serial on my laptop and the anytime upgrade keys to get to the rest so I just want to get back to Home Prem

Where do I get a copy of Windows to do that though?

Download the ISO from mydigitallife.info.

Make sure you download the version that corresponds to your Product Key-----Home Premium 64 bit English or whatever the laptop came with.

Thank you! I'll post a reply on how it goes tomorrow, I'm off to sleep it's late and I've been trying all day.

Try another PC to download, or another network. You may have limitations of some sort.

Thank you, I have done that and now it is installing. It's taken about three hours now.

I put my pendrive in, booted from it went through the custom install menu and just selected the drive where windows is currently (should I have formatted it?). Then it rebooted and took me back to the menu where you choose to repair or install windows, so i turned it off and tooke my pendrive out then it booted to finish setup and seems to just be stuck, but there are 3 ... moving after 'Completing Installation'

Is it normal for it to take this long because I don't remember the last time I installed windows.

Try wiping the HD first if you've backed up everything you need. Boot the installer, press Shift + F10 at first screen to access a Command Line, run Diskpart Clean Command.

Read the tutorial for Clean Reinstall again closely to understand and ask back any questions.

Thank you!

I've got one problem though, my blu-ray drive in the laptop stopped reading DVDs just before I reinstalled, hence why I installed from USB, and would only read blu-rays. It's still the same. Will it be the drive itself?

It now says
'BOOTMGR is missing
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart'

When I try to boot

That means the HD is trying to boot and not the installer. You must format the stick correctly with the lastest official ISO as given in steps 1 and 2 in Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7.

Set the HD first to boot in BIOS setup, Then tap the one-time BIOS Boot Menu key at boot to select the flash stick from boot menu, listed under USB, Removable or HD's.

If you don't have a one-time BIOS Boot menu key then set the flash stick to boot first in BIOS setup. But do not allow it to boot again when it reboots later in the install.

Before I did anything, I took my pendrive out and it booted.

Thank you for all your help.
