Solved Recycle bin corruption on data drives

Hi there,

My system is dual boot XP / Win7 64.

When I boot into Win7, it keeps telling me :

The recycle bin on h:\ is corrupted. Do you want to empty the Recycle Bin for this drive??

I get this error for two of my data drives.

I'm kind of paranoid about this type of thing, so I just wanted to check if it is ok to do this?

And why does Win7 say it's corrupt when I have no problems with the data drives when booted into XP?

Cheers,
Bob

Delete "$RECYCLE.BIN" from both drives. I've seen this happen most when the permission settings for those folders are altered. Windows 7 will recreate them with the proper settings. Windows XP does not use these folders.

Thanks for your response. How do I see $Recycle.bin?

I have changed the folder options by un-ticking 'Hide protected operating system files' which I thought would do the job, but still can't see the recycle bins?

Okay, I've been all over the internet trying to get this problem fixed and nothing has worked. My external G drive is the one that's messing up. Every time I delete something it gives me the corrupt recycle bin error and asks if I want to empty recycle bin for this drive. If I click yes then it says I'll need to provide administrator permission to delete this folder S-1-5-21-827892897-1989796541-124970555-1002 Date created: 10/15/2012 7:44 PM (btw I'm the only user on this PC, I am the admin, I believe this was the first time this started happening? maybe a virus of some sort? AVG doesn't detect anything but anywho) It gives me the option to continue, skip, or cancel. If I hit continue it just says folder access denied and that I need permission to make changes to this folder. (AARRGHH!) I've tried the show hidden files solution, but $Recycle.Bin doesn't show up on my G drive whatsoever. I've done the elevated command prompt thing but when I hit enter it has several lines saying access denied. At this point I feel my only option is to just to nuke the stupid thing (format it) and laugh maniacally in bitter-sweet victory, but I'm not sure even that will fix the problem since every forum I run into only details one of two solutions; both of which seem to work for everyone but me :-( HEEEEELLLLP!

Slomoman: The recycle bin is across all drives (you can configure it as one for all or each drive has it's own)

S-1-5-21-.......-1002 tells me that you have had other profiles on the machine (possibly an extra admin, or a test id)

So, you'll need to take ownership of everything under Recycle bin.
See: Context Menu - Take Ownership

Use Shift/Delete to permanently remove the file instead of placing it in the Recycle bin. I'm not sure on which drive the issue is, so you might have to delete Recycle bin on a few drives until you find the corruption.
