recycle bin icon broken, confused

if it's not one thing, it's another...

my recycle bin has fallen ill, and is constantly displaying the wrong icon. it shows it's full when it's empty, and shows it's empty when it's full. sometimes it displays the right icon, but other times it refuses to cooperate.

i can remove the recycle bin from the desktop, bring it back, and see the right icon, but it usually messes up the next time i 'use' it.

sfc didn't help.

any thoughts?
