Redbox vs Netflix

Came across an interesting piece the other day. It appears that there is a DVD war starting to heat up between Redbox and Netflix. Redbox now has over sixteen thousand of their kiosks in place through the U.S.

Now for those who do not know what a Redbox Kiosk is; it is a movie venting machine where you can rent a first run movie for $1.00 a night (cost more if you want to keep it for several nights). The machines can hold up to two hundred movies, and in most cases include around seventy movies to chose from.

Netflix rents movie at different structural sittings; depending on how much you set your monthly payment setup at. For instance as a Netflix member my account cost me $20.00 a month. What comes with that membership is unlimited movies (at three movies a mailing) per month. With this membership I could conceivably get up to as many as twelve movies a month if I worked it out right at a cost of only $20.00.

Because of Redbox Netflix has implemented streaming video (movies) that you can watch on line using your existing account (the number of movies you watch is dependent on your account.

So if you had a choice between Redbox (started by McDonald's now owned by Coinsites (Think that Right)), or Netflix what would you chose? :huh:

Netflix, just because it's a pain to set out a time to return and pick up dvds from a store or kiosk. And seriously 70 movie selection? Might as well walk over to a neighbor's, they'll have more movies than that. Netflix lets you just line up a hundred movies and then pretty much forget about it except for going to your mailbox.

Incline to agree with you. Netflix is nice because you can stream video to your computer and watch a movie without leaving the house. And, having a 28" Hannspree monitor it sure is nice.

Now having said that I live in what is known as a depressed part of the country, and computer intellect is not on a global scale here, however, there is a Wal-Mart about two miles from the house with a Redbox Kiosk which is always out of rentals. In fact the Blockbuster Video store went out of business within two months after its installation.

Well I am not a movie person... but I was going to get money at the ATM last night (which I went to Royal Farms since they have a Bank of America ATM there) and they have a Red Box outside and there was a damn line of like 5-8 people waiting to get movies! I was like WTF! lol

I've got one of the compatible devices and it actually works pretty well.

Knew the XBox 360 worked with Netflix, and my LG TV, but it is good to hear of the others. Haven't setup the LG to receive Netflix because my computer is in one room and the LG is in another (will have to see if there is a way to setup a wireless signal).

The wife and I watch a lot of movies. We got tired of paying the ever increasing rental prices from the movie stores like Blockbuster. The cheapest place locally is at $5.00 per movie, and Blockbuster is at $5.50 now (new release movies, older movies vary in price from $0.99 to 3.00).
So we got the $8.95 per month (2 discs at a time) Netflix and we rent probably 20 movies per month. Most of what we have gotten lately has been some TV series, more specifically Battlestar Galactica. Right now we are up to season 2.5, disc 2 (came in today).

With the RedBox, we see them at WalMart and other places but none of them are close enough for us to actually get any benefit from them. There is another non-Redbox brand video kiosk thing at the local grocery store but they charge $2.50 per 48 hours). We love the convenience of just getting the discs in the mail and send them back after we are done. We live an hour from their main distribution center in Panama City, FL so we get it the after they send it out.

We also use the streaming through my laptop (with W7) to watch some movies and shows on our 37" Vizio LCD.

Netflix lost my support they started throttling me.

I won't even think about using them again after they put it in their cust. agreement.
