Reducing the size of C:

Hi

I have bought a dell studio with 500 GB HD. Total HD space was dedicated to C:.
I have resized it to two 50 GBs as A: B: , 150 GB as free and 250 GB for C:
I like to shrink C: further, but it shows the size of the available shrink space as zero.
Is that possible to shirnk C: further?

Use free Partition Wizard bootable CD to Resize it smaller. http://www.partitionwizard.com/download.html

If you want it smaller than that, use Perfect Disk 10 trial version to defrag for compactness, then rightclick on C to choose Offline Defrag of System files.

Have a look at Option One in this tutorial at the link below to see how to use Partition Wizard to do the shrink; just keep in mind that there is a limited number of non-Logical partitions that can be created and used, you may need to create this one as an "Extended" partition so that "logicals" can be created inside of it.

Curious why you set up a 50GB A and B partition? Those letters are normally associated with floppy drives. I wonder if it will confuse any software you try to install there?

Also, why put C:, your boot drive, at the end of the drive rather than at the front?

Yes, its sounds like a mess of partitions, fix everything with Partition Wizard : Use the Bootable CD - Windows 7 Forums so that you won't have any conflicts in the future.

Partition wizard works great. I have compressed C: to 100 GB and three logical drives with 50 GB and left the remaining as unallocated space.(because i like to install linux later)

To Ztruker
Just i named the drives as A & B. is that wrong i dont know.
nowadays we dont have floppy drives so i take it as for my convenience.
i have installed some other softwares in it but doesnt make any probs.
Is there any logical issues in naming drives?

Try doing shrinking the c partition from the disk management console to avoid the possibility of losing data when using a 3rd party disk utility. If the shrink partition option is unavailable, or if the amount of space available to shrink is significantly less than the indicated free space it's because there are critical system file scattered around the HDD. In that case, stop as many services and processes as possible, use a third party defragmenter like JkDefrag, to consolidate your files as much as possible, then go ahead and use a 3rd party partition editor
