Refreshing of the Device Manager

Since installing 7100 on an HP tx2500, I've ran into a strange problem with Device Manager.

Ever 10 minutes the new device 'ding' sounds and the Device Manager (if opened) will reload. However there are no new devices installed and those devices that are installed have drivers.

Any suggestions?

I have exactly the same problem, although it's more like every 30-40 seconds for me.

preveously, I had build 7000 installed on this machine and it was having no problems

I suspect that some device did not install it's drivers properly and is being removed and added every few seconds. Is there a good way to tell the source of the refresh? or to figure out what devices are installing and uninsalling themselves?

I thought about using process monitor, but I am not familier enough with the program to effectively use it.

Any help would be apprecated, this constant dinging is driving me batty (and i know that i could turn of the sound, but that doesn't solve the root problem)

I can't tell if the problem is with it looking for Bluetooth devices or if I failed to install one with 7100 that is called at start-up. Honestly I wish it would tell me ala Vista which one was throwing the problem

Or, it could be that you have a device that has drivers loaded and is active, but is going to sleep, or else your BIOS / hardware is putting it to sleep, but then it wakes up b/c of use / activation / whatever, and thus your Device manager thinks it is a new device - but upon checking realizes that it is in fact a device that has woken up....and thus you never actually see a new device.

As for Vine's issue, I think that may be more along the lines of failing hardware, in terms of it happening more than once a minute....

john, could this problem be due to the wmiprvse.exe? From what i recall, it has been an issue in earlier OS's... if a driver hasnt been found for any hardware, this constantly scans and tries to "fix" what isnt installed, or not installed with correct driver. I had to lookup this info while installing this wireless adapter vista driver in many comp modes, some making the cpu jump off the charts. Also, while doing this and reason why i am responding is, i had the device manager open while i was back and forth installing in different comp modes to see how if and when the device picked up the driver. One time i got two "hardware failed to connect" beeps. Which i found strange. so yea, this perks my interest here somewhat.

It could be that as well....but every 10 minutes (or even worse, 30-40 seconds)?

If so, then I'd say there is a combination firewall and wmipsrv issue - but I still have a feeling that something is going to sleep without permission - such as a Bluetooth connection....that might then re-establish itself b/c of a Bluetooth enabled cellular phone that pings the Bluetooth stack in 7....

I don't know if this helps but I did a rebuild using 7100 32bit over the weekend and did not notice the problem until I ran Windows Update for the first time.

I wonder if something in the update is causing the problem?

I had the same problem on my HP Pavilion tx2000 right after I replaced 7000 with 7100... every so often the add or remove hardware device sound would blurt out. After experimentation I found that disabling the AuthenTec fingerprint reader in the device manager stopped it. HP's website had that driver, so I'll uninstall later and give it shot. I don't miss is much, since windows 7's support of my fingerprint reader has been really flaky anyway.
