Solved Regedit (0xc0000142) error

Not sure where to ask this to be honest. I'm having a few problem with my laptop one of which is that I can't open regedit. I get the following message; The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000142)

I have ran SFC which found no problems. I also ran Spybot and Microsoft Security Essentials which also found no problems. In case there is a connection the other two problems I'm having are that System Restore doesn't work and my latest Windows updates won't install, the installation fails at 15% and it then reverts to the previous state. I have tried several Microsoft Fix it tools with regard to the update problem but it has made no difference.

Try booting to Safe Mode with Networking via the Advanced Boot Options Menu.
Run your Anti-virus scanner then download, update and run a quick Malware Bytes Anti Malware (free version) scan.

Fix any malware found.

See if that helps.

Hi there, thanks for the reply. I was in safe mode earlier and it didn't make any difference at all. Sorry I forgot to mention that in my original post. As for Malwarebytes I'm not too sure how to take it. The problems I'm having only started when I installed Malwarebytes and ran it. Any problems it found were fixed but I discovered that it had also changed my search engine to some piece of rubbish called Babylon which I had more problems than enough trying to get rid off.

I had a look at that wiki-errors link and it advised installing a free program called ErrorRepair.exe. Now maybe it's just me but I'm always suspicious of any 'free' program which claims to solve a computer problem. For that reason I ran a check on this particular program and found the following information;

Ransomware is malicious software that encrypts the hard drive of the infected computer or the files holding important information. The hacker then extorts money from the computer’s owner in exchange for the possibility to have access to the data again.


My question therefore is has anyone actually used this tool before recommending it?

Hum good call Gozozman it was just a random call for me I didn't go any further than the ref mate so full marks to you. Mind you if I had dug down like you did I would have been suspicious too as I am like you always very wary of too good to be true stuff.

The other ref i think was ok though and I did see some from Microsoft if I am not mistaken. Still full marks to you as I am usually referring to wiki answers now I shall be a bit more careful.

Does regedt32 work? No idea why it's there but from what I can find all it does is call regedit. Try it an see what happens.

Could you tell us what site you downloaded Malwarebytes Anti Malware from that you got Babylon. It would help others to know. Babylon seem to doing this on a lot of sites piggy backing very good and trusted programs. This would be of great help to all of us.

Hi Layback Bear, I only ever download software from trusted sites and in this case it was the Computeractive magazine download site.

@Ztruker. I didn't even know that was there, but yes at least it opens up so I assume it works. Is it the same as Regedit? I still want to have access to it obviously although I don't need it now as I was going to use it to get rid of any Babylon stuff that was left behind.

With you LB there are far too many innocuous, camouflaged, and almost disguised add ons that like you I find so ruddy annoying. The one that gets me is why does a company that provides us with a player and a reading platform have to include stuff like the bars it does:sarc:

Mind you thank heaven for regedit if you know how to use it eh?
