Registration Key Quandry

I purchased a new laptop with Windows Home Premium 64-bit and purchase the upgrade to Win 7 Pro.

About 2 weeks later, the harddrive went bad, and I had to have the laptop replaced with a new one. I upgraded the new laptop to Win 7 Pro.

Now, my system info page says that I must register my key code by tomorrow or certain functionality will be lost. I attempted to enter the key code on the bottom of my laptop and the key code for my Win 7 Pro upgrade and neither works.

Does this mean I need to re-install my original Windows 7 and start over or is there some way to avoid this? I just got through reinstalling all of my software and running a Carbonite restore for all of my data files. I hope I don't need to do this a third time.

Thanks,

Tom J.

When you try to install. Do not put your number in until the end of the process. Then if it does not work you will be provided with a number to call. Because you have the OEM version of Vista, you may have to call the MFG of your computer.

Why wait? Contact ASUS now. You could also contact MS now and see what they can do to help you.

If i'm not mistaken your getting the "Invalid License Key" error correct? ;)

if that's the case its an easy fix just call MS to re-load your Product Key. The process is real easy, no re-installation required and the whole process just takes 10mins. over the phone :D

Why were you attempting to insert the Vista OEM license key from the bottom of your laptopto license a Window 7 Pro Upgrade you purchased and installed over Vista?

You said you reinstalled your Win7 Pro Upgrade after replacing the hard drive. You should have put your Win7 Upgrade key in then, and activated when you got online.

Find your Win7 Pro Upgrade package and get the license key off the card insert, insert it in the activation link at Computer>Properties. It should auto-activate or require a quick robo call to MS.

Otherwise, then run the Win7 installer from the desktop to do a Repair install, which is an in-place Upgrade over itself which should allow you to insert the Windows 7 key.

He did try the Win 7 key:

I attempted to enter the key code on the bottom of my laptop and the key code for my Win 7 Pro upgrade and neither works.

I'm back in business

Thanks to all of the responses to my upgrade issue.

I contacted Asus and they were able to provide me with an updated product key and I'm back in business. Kudos to Asus. I was immediately greeted by a knowledeable lady (as opposed to a painful automated phone process). She had to go off line for a few minutes to talk to with one of her tech experts, but came back with an updated key to get me running again.

Plus, I was able to set up a date with her next weekend (gotcha - just kiddin'). ;)

I have a dual boot system with Win 7 on one hard disk and XP on the other. My EVGA 790i motherboard went South (SATA controller went bad) yesterday. I have a new exact replacement MB on the way from EVGA. I will be using the same exact components; hard disks, video card, sound card, CPU (E8400) on the motherboard. Will I have to re-register my installed Win 7 and XP systems? I can't find a phone number at Microsoft to call and ask the question. Guidance would be very appreciated.

Wouldn't have thought so, your OS's should just run normally from the existing hard drives they're already present upon once you fit the new board.

That is if the motherboard is different form the original one. Microsoft places a ponit value on system components, once you have exceeded the accepted point value microsoft validation reports it as a different system. Their is a post on the point value somewhere here on the forums. Often just a call to microsoft with an explination is all the is required Fabe

If the guys mainboard is being swapped out it would imply he's not using OEM versions of Windows, and therefore the activations of XP and W7 won't be BIOS coded - about the only differences which will physically happen are that any MAC codes for native network adapters will very possibly change.

Were he using an OEM supplied computer it'd have to be under a month old, in which case he'd be RMA'ing the whole bundle and not merely replacing his mainboard - and that's where I am coming from with my opinion that he won't have to reactivate his Microsoft OS's - together with the fact he won't even need to reload them.

Thanks very much for the help and input. Hopefully I won't have a problem. I presume if there is one then a phone number would pop up on my computer to call.

Thanks again, very valuable info.
