Solved Registry adjusts when reboot after using Disk Cleanup

I am not an expert. At least once a month I use Disk Cleanup and delete (a) all but the latest restore point if all seems well and (b) the table of items that can be deleted that appears on first run of Disk Cleanup. I did this on Sunday 23 March and, when turning the computer OFF, saw that adjustments were being to the registry. Nothing like that happened when I turned the machine back ON.

I now discover that I can no longer add attachments to my emails using the dialogue box. I can add attachments via drag and drop. The email system (whether using IE11 or Google Chrome) just freezes when the dialogue box attempts to open and I have to shut down the browser(s) and re-open.

I still had the latest automatic restore point dated 21st March and ran that but it made no difference. I have been through sfc /scannow and it said some files couldn't be adjusted. I have the results of the scan and I have opened the file but do not understand the results. I get no error codes but I have downloaded (but not run) System update readiness tool. In safe mode I have also checked for booting problems but all seems clear.

I have McAfee Security software and I also run Hitman occasionally but my machine is said to be clear.

I may be wrong but it seems to me that 'something' went into a restore point when my last batch of Windows Updates were installed earlier in March. That 'something' got activated when I deleted the earlier restore points.

Does anybody have any bright ideas as to what has happened and how to recover the use of my email attachment dialogue box? It isn't a desperate situation as I can add attachments by drag and drop but it is a bit of a nuisance. I have Windows 7 Home Premium.

SFC /SCANNOW must be done in the proper fashion.
Use this tutorial by Brink. Please read completely.
Let us know the results. We need to know if sfc /scannow is happy with the system files before going any farther.

Perseverance Pays Off

Hi Layback Bear,
Thank you for your help. I followed Option 2 instructions down as far as the NOTE (except I did not attempt Option 1):-
"If still not, then you can attempt to run a System Restore using a restore point dated before the bad file occured to fix it. You may need to repeat doing a System Restore until you find a older restore point that may work." In other words I had restored (again) back to 21st March restore point to see if anything had changed as a result of following the instructions thus far.
I had run sfc /scannow a number of times - both before and after installing and running System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) and I had kept on checking to see if my problem was resolved between each sfc /scannow run. No success. And there was no success after restoring back to 21st March.

I hadn't felt confident enough to go any further with the list of instructions BUT:-
I started all over again after going back to the 21st March restore point. I decided to do 3 sfc /scannow checks in a row WITHOUT CHECKING MY EMAIL TO SEE IF THERE WAS ANY IMPROVEMENT and before installing and running SURT again. I then did another 4 sfc /scannow checks after installing and running SURT again WITHOUT CHECKING MY EMAIL TO SEE IF THERE WAS ANY IMPROVEMENT until I had finished the whole procedure. Lo and behold the email system was working again.

I think the instructions you directed me to gave me the message that perseverance and patience were going to be needed if I might have a chance of solving this problem and it appears to have paid off.

I'm glad you got things working again.
Many people forget to reboot after every scan.
Their is a reason for the method and I will try to explain.
SFC stands for Windows 7 System Files and they must be correct.
SFC does things in stages. The scan (1) will fix what it can but many times it needs to restart to fix things before it can continue. Scan (1) fixed enough things to allow it to look for more problems using scan (2) ect.

In layman's terms.
You have to fix the first bridge in the road before you can get to the second bridge needing repair and so on.
