Besides CCleaner I also use Revo Uninstaller to remove the Registry Values of programs that are being permanently removed from my computer.

I never ever ever even consider using Revo (have seen it cause too many problems - I know it goes well for most people, but I have seen the other cases!) and I never use registry cleaners, CCleaner, registry defragmenters, etc. etc. I run Auslogics Defragmenter, and TFC, and that does me!

I know a few things about computers and dared to use CCleaner. Even now I am recovering from its cleanup. On default settings it disabled my wifi, rendered my AV inoperative, and a few dozen more problems.

WoW! I've been using CCleaner on both of my computers for many years and never had a single problem when using its very gentile Registry Cleaner. I've read many other Members who have also had the same great experience using CCleaner for ages without a single incident and I'm wondering how it is that some people have met with these kind of very severe disasters while others never do?

Maxx, I recently worked with a BSOD caused by Ccleaner registry cleaner. The OP admitted he just blindly followed Ccleaner and did not check the keys Ccleaner had identified. No registry cleaner is 100% safe or foolproof, even Ccleaner.

I agree with you and the Devs at CCleaner must agree also because they put in an excellent 100% safe and foolproof Registry backup feature along with a default nag screen reminder to use it before each Registry cleaning. The danger is not using the Registry Cleaner in CCleaner the danger comes in not taking a few seconds to do the simple and quick backup provided that will restore the Registry to its original state.

It's not only one of the best, but it will give you the option to backup your registry before cleaning it. One other point, when it comes to cleaning the registry, you will find many different opinions as to weather or not it's a good idea to even clean the registry. Some will say that it's better to leave it as it is because cleaning it could get rid of something that you need and could therefore give you some big problems; and who knows, they could be right. I do clean mine sometimes, but wit some reluctance.

I have not seen any adverse effects from NOT cleaning the registry in Win 7. Keep in mind that I am not talking about cleaning the registry of Trojan and other Malware keys. That is another subject. Likewise I have not seen any ill effects from cleaning the registry of obsolete keys - those that are definitely associated with and only associated with uninstalled hardware and software. If you are 100% positive the key you are considering deleting belongs to something you have uninstalled, you are probably safe. If you have any doubt, leave it. It will not hurt anything. Never delete anything in the registry or make any registry changes without first backing up the registry.

Regarding its 100% safe registry backup, it isnt. The resotre of Ccleaners reg backup just made it worse.

I am just fortunate that I have a day old backup (Acronis of course) to restore from.


All of this stemmed from trying to remove Microsoft Office 2010. It seems the trial makes a reg entry that stuffs the reg if you want to install it again.

zigzag3143- I'm sorry to hear that things went so poorly for you, but with all due respect my experience with the CCleaner backup has been quite different from yours in that it perfectly restored the Registry on the one occasion that I found myself having to use it.

I also uninstalled the the Microsoft Office 2010 bloatware from my new HP Win 7 x64 desktop using Revo Uninstaller Pro x64 and it deftly removed the massive proliferation of leftover Registry keys and values and the computer has been running perfectly ever since. Which makes me glad that the Registry in my new HP computer does not have to continue to be bloated with all that useless junk after the removal of several GB of bloatware as well as trialware that HP installed on it.
