Reinstall Windows 7 without CD

Good day everyone,

I want to reinstall windows 7 on my netbook (Asus 1201HA) because it crashed yesterday (I get a blue screen with: *** STOP: 0x000000A5 (0X0001000b, 0x50434146,0xffd06200,0x00000000))

Of course I got the license but I don't know what to do now since I don't have a CD of Windows 7.

You can just borrow from a friend, all DVD are the same. The key determines if the OS is valid

If the OS came preinstalled with the computer, you have an OEM edition. You have to call the computer mfg, in that situation. You cannot borrow.

If Windows 7 came pre-installed, you probably have a recovery partition. look in the advanced boot menu to see if there is an option for the recovery partition: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/666-advanced-boot-options.html

Look at the first option in step 3 (Repair your computer)

The ACPI_BIOS_ERROR bug check has a value of 0x000000A5. This bug check indicates that the Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) BIOS of the computer is not fully compliant with the ACPI specification.

Your stop error points to BIOS. you probably haven't done anything to the BIOS though. The issue could be hardware. Is the computer under warrentee or purchased at a store that can test it out for you?

I got it preinstalled so I'm going to try the recovery partition now and otherwise I have to contact Asus right?

You should be able to get into the BIOS, BIOS for Beginners : Introduction
If you are comfortable doing so. I dont know your level of computer skills so If you have tried any of these things, please let us know. If you can get into the BIOS, then check to see what hardware the system is recognizing. Make sure whatever you see in BIOS matches your specifications for your computer.

correct, there might be a few things we can try to sort it out, but if you are getting a BSOD on startup and cant get into windows, then the options are limited a little.

If the recovery partition doesn't do it, then I would advise getting Asus on phone as support. The stop error is usually seen in installs, Asus support might have seen this issue already. The more people looking at it, the easier your re-install or fix (if possible) will be.

If your able to get to the advanced boot options, try the Safe Mode option and see if it starts up.

Edit: sorry for possible confusion. look at Theog's post, is the Hard drive recognized in the BIOS. Also, the advanced boot options are outside of BIOS.

I've looked at the BIOS Setup Utility but it doesn't show HD (the only thing I see is about Hard Disk Security).

I hope this doesn't mean it's broken or anything like that?!

Ok just to make sure we know what happened, you had Win7 pre-install (Home Premium?) and your brother tried to install Win7 Pro?

Was the pro version an upgrade that he had available?
do you have a DVD drive on your netbook?
if not, how was he trying to install? through Win 7?

OEM upgrades are not interchangeable. you would only be able to upgrade from one version to another if you have the same OEM.

This might have caused the issue. When it crashed, what happened, as much detail as possible please.


I don't know if the attempted install would change any of your BIOS settings, but it is worth checking. You can probably reset the BIOS to its default settings.

Only thing I can think of is Ultimate Boot CD: Ultimate Boot CD - Overview

You can also put this on a USB drive and boot from it. You can test the Hard drive with one of the programs on the CD.

I dont know as much about this, there are a lot of programs for troubleshooting in that program
