I have windows 7 home and I installed it on a desktop computer in my home, unfortunately about a month ago I had alot of problems with that desktop and we trashed it (It was old also) and bought a laptop. Now when I install Windows 7 on the laptop, everthing works fine except the activation.

How can I reinstall and Activate this?

I hope I didnt pay for a program and use it for a week and now I cannot activate it!

If it fails activation it prompts you with a phone # to activate... Have you call MS?

If the original copy that you had was an OEM version, you may not be able to activate on your new laptop...you will need to purchase a retail copy of windows 7..

Where did you get Windows 7? Is it Upgrade or full Retail? Is it OEM version?

It was an upgrade from Vista, bought it at Bestbuy

If you installed it to a clean HD, you may need to use one of the workarounds given here to get it to accept the Upgrade version key: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/31402-clean-install-upgrade-windows-7-version.html

If there was any other OS at the time you booted or ran the installer, it should have allowed use of the Upgrade version key.

If necessary, try one of the workarounds given to get it to accept Product Key at Control Panel>System. If rejected follow the links to call MS to activate.

Thanks for the help..

I called the number and gave them the code it had on the computer, but it still wont activate. I called microsoft and basically got a run around after 30mins, still no help...

Call MS Customer Service to validate the Product Key. Then they will open a case with Tech SUpport to get it activated. Their company policy is to work these cases through to completion with any cooperative customer.
