Reinstall XP on Dual boot system with 7

Hi all,

Hoping that someone will be able to help me out. I had previously had XP then Win7 installed in that order.

Just today I needed to reinstall XP on the same partition that it was on. Now my problem is that because of the reinstall, the bootloader that Win7 changed is now gone and I no longer have the option to select Win 7 during bootup.

Is there away to get the option back without having to re-install Win7 all over again?

Yes. Boot from the Win7 DVD and run startup repair. Further info in the tutorials section (use search).

On that system, especially, you shouldn't be wasting your time with dual-booting (dead tech to me). XP Mode eliminates the need to dual boot.

I dual boot with Windows XP also, for gaming (most games still run fastest in Windows XP - faster graphics, better sound).

Older games, maybe, but many of those will run perfectly fine in XP Mode. Newer, more recent games, are running faster in Windows 7.

Most major trade mags would dispute what you are saying, so if you disagree, you could always contact them. I won't even go into most users testing on HardForum, or many other respected online sites doing their own testing. I'd say there's plenty disputing it!

XP, running native on a system, is a dead, outdated method. It's time to let the venerable legend pass on, and go with the new favorite.

I don't need to read any articles written by someone else to see the facts. I'm an expert gamer and 99% of games run better on Windows XP. I have run plenty of benchmarks, and seen other experts who make benchmarks that prove it. In my opinion Windows XP is not dead technology when it can still outperform 7 in some areas. If you don't like XP, that's fine with me. Have a cookie.

Then you need to check your definition of facts. A tried and true test, that's repeatable, will ALWAYS trump one individuals experiences. I could tell you that my computer cured cancer yesterday, does that mean it is true and factual? What if I said I was an "expert gamer" and found that 99% of my games run better on Windows 7...would that automatically be factual?

Absoultely not, and its rather foolish to ignore a scientific test over personal opinion. Don't take my word for it, and don't take one website's word for it. Educate yourself by reading several tests done by various parties. If you choose not to, and want to close your mind to facts, that's fine....but don't mislead others or give bad advice just because you don't choose to believe it.

I won't even touch the security comment in your signature, because it clearly shows you close your minds to facts and make up your own mind to suit your own purposes. If you decided to open your mind, and educate yourself with some reading, you'll find out what OS is more secure.

Do as you wish, and think what you wish with your own system, but when you are giving advice to others, and answering their questions...stick to the facts. You wouldn't want your auto mechanic lying to you, or giving you incorrect info, would you?

I dont really see much of a difference between the 2. Its just that the XP drivers are more mature for the hardware that I have got compared to the win7 drivers. Some win7 drivers are somewhat buggy, and I might use vista drivers which while they do work - are not optimised for Win7

But yeah, when I do get a new game - it goes straight onto Win7. If it seems buggy, I install it on XP.

One more thing you might consider, especially since the prices are down, is to upgrade to 4 GB of memory. That could easily help in gaming performance, and might also account for what you've thought was driver issues. It isn't hard these days to use close to 2 GB of memory for a game.

Yeah, ive been meaning to get another 2 gig of ram for a while. I'll probably go x64 too
