Reinstallation issue

I recently reinstalled w7 on the same drive as my original installation had a couple of errors. It stored my old installation as windows.old but now when booting I get the option to boot from Windows 7 or previous version which I cant as it has a boot error. I've moved the folder windows.old to a separate drive for the time being but would like to just boot straight from the new installation. Any advice please?

Type msconfig in start search box. Under msconfig Boot tab, delete the errant entry.

Since you did not do a clean format but instead installed the OS in the same drive this occurs. But if you would want to go straight into the new installation, then right click computer and go to properties.

Now click on 'Advance System Properties' and go to the 'Advanced' tab.

Under the title 'Startup and Recovery' menu go to settings.

There in the very first drop down menu you can select the default OS, in your case the newly installed OS. Also uncheck 'Time to display list of operating systems' so that you don't have to wait to select the correct operating system as it directly goes to your selected OS.

You can undo it if you are not happy with the outcome anyway.

You did not report until now that there is boot failure. How would we know?

What happens if you use the arrow key to select Earlier Version?

How close did you come to following the steps to get a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7.

If not close, then I would start over and do it right. Read the SPecial Note for Dell Owners at the end.

Why can`t you post the requested shot of disk management ?

Agreed, I would start over and boot from the dvd, and delete all partitions if you`ve gotten your data off.

Yes moved it to another drive.

Looking at your Disk Management. At the top it shows Disk 0 as having 5 partitions, but in the picture of Disk 0, there are only 3 showing. Are there more that you didn't show in your screenshot?

Looks fine to me, 8 partitions up top and 8 below.

But 55 GB taken out of C: already, is very high.

What error did you report at boot on your new install? You said you reinstalled because of errors. This should mean there is only one installation so is it erroring too? If so how are you getting into Windows?

As you'd know if you read the note to Dell Owners in Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 the Recovery partition will no longer run after doing a reinstall and not Recovery. So that partition is now dead weight, yet providing the boot for Win7. This is not optimal or desired. This is why I suggested you read the Special Note for Dell Owners and then consider doing it over to get it right.

This time unplug all other HD's, on Disk0 during install delete all partitions except the first small OEM partition, providing Dell Diagnostics will run from boot when you tap the F12 key and choose Diagnostics and then Utility Partition. These are valuable and will run after a reinstall so I would keep only the first partition if they run.

When I tried a clean reinstall to factory OEM it wouldn't work so had to use a disk. Its taken me all weekend and yesterday to reload everything which is all working ok. If no easy way to delete the old boot option I'll just leave it set as per Vasanth MS suggestion.
