Reinstalled Windows 7 - Samsung Laptop - drivers not installing

I recently reinstalled windows 7 on my samsung rv511 laptop and now it's running very slow and many features aren't working.

i've been reading forums and chipping away for 2 weeks so far. if anyone has any other ideas, they'd be much appreciated.


here are the main problems i have noticed
1. hdmi connection not working.
2. itunes tells me i don't have hd drivers installed.
3. computer generally running slowly.
4. shift keys and caps lock key often don't work (this was also an issue before reinstall)
5. 3 samsung drivers failed to install on multiple occasions.


here's what i've done so far;
1. reinstalled windows 7 from cd
2. installed all windows updates
3. installed all drivers for my model from samsung website
4. installed all windows automatic and optional updates
5. ran nvidia scan to check for updates (none needed)

i've read on seven forums that samsung computers can be very difficult to reinstall, so any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks, I'm a bit stumped. It sounds as though ypu tried all of the right things.

Please provide a little background on the Win7 install
Where did you get the install disc?
Is Windows Activated?
Did you do a clean install or an upgrade?
If an upgrade, from Vista, XP?

The easiest thing for both of us is for you to re-install. Hunting down all of these drivers one at a time is very time consuming for either of us. I don't see anything in the data you provided that makes that any easier.

Read over this tutorial and ask any questions before you begin. It's fairly straight forward, step-by-step instructions. There are some things people miss though (surprisingly the boxes with info, warnings, and tips). Pay attention to linked steps too.

I suggest you create the Install media (info in tutorial) and use that to install.

The install takes very little time, but the updates after SP1 add a few hours.

It's a pseudo SP2, MS calls it a Hotfix Rollup. It saves a bit of time updating Windows.

Add a few more hours to load your productivity suite, and other necessary programs. Call it a full day.

You're not doing the work, it's really just a matter of seeing if Windows is still chugging away or needs you to tell it to get more updates. You continue telling Windows to get more updates until nothing more is offered. And you're done.

I've done it in 4 1/2 hours sitting there watching and getting the next batch, but that's too much like work

All of the instructions are in the tutorial - read over it and let members know if you're going to re-install.

That's the best I can offer on this issue.

Did you follow Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 to first thing enable Automatically deliver drivers via Windows Update (Step 3) then install all Important and Optional Windows Updates, with reboots, checking back for more Updates until there are no more offered? This is how Win7 delivers drivers and important patches to make them work.

Only drivers still missing in Device Manager after this should be imported.

- I got the install disc from a work mate. It came with his computer so it's official, it's not the one that came with my computer, but it is for the same W7 version as mine (Home Premium 64bit). Hopefully that is ok to use?
- Windows is not activated. I used a program to search my computer and show the activation key before reinstalling, but that must have given me the wrong key - the sticker had rubbed off. If I can get my laptop back up and running, and get the keyboard working I might just buy another W7 licence.

Also, after the initial reinstall I installed every single driver on the Samsung website (for my model)... which had worked fine with previous reinstalls on old computers. Hopefully that was my downfall. Will have a go with your instructions above and let you know how it goes. Thanks for your guidance!

Be sure to follow the steps in red for how to handle drivers in Win7. The steps compile everything that's worked best in tens of thousands of installs we've directly helped with here since beta.

If you hadn't Clean Reinstalled before and still had the factory preinstalled WIn7, then the key audited off the hard drive is not the same as the COA sticker key and will not work for reinstall. Your choices are then to order Recovery disks, force Recovery to run if it won't, buy a new key for the version you install, or back up the Factory SLP Activation file to reinstall afterwards - this latest one is mentioned only as a courtesy because by decision of the Admins we cannot support it even though this use would be legal so you'll need to research it yourself.

The Re-install tutorials shows were you can get the official MS Win7 ISO - these are better than using a borrowed disk.

Usually an OEM does not provide install media - they let you create one copy form the Recovery partition on the hard drive. You didn't say who manufactured your work mates machine - so there might well be an install disk. Technically, it is against the End User License Agreement (EULA) to install that on a 2nd machine.

Searching for the license key in the registry is tricky, people often get the wrong or invalid key.

Is the COA sticker completely rubbed off - nothing on it? If there is a partial number, or the bar code, you might contact Microsoft to see if they can help. Bar codes only need a fraction of the full code to be readable.
Better to straighten out any licensing issues early.

Let Windows Update everything first, including drivers. The only one you'll need is the Ethernet controller so you can get to the Internet. I suggest Ethernet, not wireless. It's faster, easier and it might save you some time.

Follow the instructions in the tutorial step-by-step
- read all of the info, note, tip, and warning boxes.
- follow any links to steps in other tutorials.

If you have any questions - ask them first.

The activation key was probably the right key, you just have to call the 800 number and get a new key. You just give them the key from your product sticker or whatever you copied from the sticker. Aida64 can also read your product key as well, plus it is a handy program to have to monitor system temps and voltages and speeds.

I had a gateway 17" laptop, made for vista, and the HDMI output would not work. Your system, was it made for vista or 7? If the former, you'll have to locate the HDMI driver for vista and extract the exe file, then manually add the drivers, pointing it toward the extracted location. If you get a driver warning, ignore it.

Sometimes the vista driver installer can be set for compatibility mode, and it will bypass the halt on "wrong OS".
