So does anyone know a suitable command prompt that might help? A CP is one option in the system recovery options.

Ken mate I would consider disabling the Avira for a bit or even changing it to a free one because it does seem to me to be maybe a software issue.

Now for what it is worth at Office Works you can get a Kaspersky licence key - 3PC's for 2 years or 3 devices for 2 years for just $89 $69 if you are lucky. Now you don't need to be Einstein to work out the cost of that and even if you have only one machine the same key can be used after 2 years again and then again after 2 years so really you are getting a 6 year x 1PC licence
I have been using it for six years and the support (Kaspersky Labs Melbourne) is pretty darn good. Now having said that you also need to have MBAM and SAS free on board to catch the small stuff because a i always say no AV is infallible.

My laptop crashed overnight, I'm trying to restore it in system recovery, it won't open windows at all but one option is to go to a command prompt. If someone can tell me a good command prompt to help recover it. I'll start a new thread after this.

Managed to fix it, turn off, turn on, hold F2 and start in safe mode, picked an earlier restore point!
