Reinstalling Win7 on netbook with two harddrives

I tried SFC-scannow, it didn't find any problems.
Also, MSE finished, no problems.

Excellent.

Now that you have a working system, even if not all cleaned up yet, then:
1. delete all restore points.
2. reduce size for restore points to 3 GB
3. create a new restore point.

Typically Win 7 will set aside much more space for restore points than an intelligent user will need.

OK, now here's how you accomplish those steps:
WIN | type Create Restore Point | ENTER |

The System Properties dialog will open up to the System Protection tab |
Click on the CONFIGURE button | slide the slider to 3 GB |
Click on the DELETE button | APPLY button | OK button |

You now have removed all restore points. You need to create one.

click on the CREATE button | give your restore point a description |
CREATE button | CLOSE button | OK button

How much of your 250gb HD is being used? If you have the space to spare I would not trim my Restore Point space but instead apportion even more so that you get more points which hang around longer. This can be critical if you become infected but don't realize it for some weeks or months. I set my new installs to 20%. It is adjusted according to available space.

I sometimes salvage an installation by restoring 3-6 months back.

Now let's follow up on Greg's suggestion re using CCleaner to do some program cleaning, BUT we are not going to clean out any programs at this moment.

First, we need to stop some programs from running at startup time and gumming up the works.

When you stop them from running at startup time, you do not stop the program or delete or disable the program. You are simply stopping the program from running at startup time. Later if the program is needed then the program will perform the "startup actions"

I'd like for you to use the following and I'll immediately look at the file you post so that you know which programs aren't needed at startup time.

Here it is. I think it has to be in a normal state because I clean it every now and then with msconfig or earlier TuneUp (TU divided startup processes into optional, unnecessary and necessary, I usually stopped everything which wasn't necessary, except if I knew that I'd want the particular software to run at startup).


Sorry, Igen=Yes, Nem=No. I'm surprised to see Canon MyPrinter on the list since I've uninstalled that software recently as my Canon printer refuses to work with Win7 computers..*sigh*.

I uninstalled the factory stuff I wouldn't need when I first used the computer Though there still some things all Asus-software which I don't need if I'd need or not. But all the games and non-Asus stuff are already gone.

Uncheck ALL except for:
MSC "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Client\msseces.exe" -hide -runkey

uncheck all except for the MSE entry.

Incidentally, now that your system has been cleaned and you have MSE running, then you can go into the MalwareBytes option section and uncheck the option to run at startup time and the option to look for updates.

Use the following procedure so that I can get a feel for how much room you've got on your hard disk.


HOW TO POST A SNAPSHOT OF DISK MANAGEMENT DISPLAY

Run disk management:
WIN | type DISKMGMT.MSC | ENTER
WIN is the key with the wavy flag.

Maximize the output of Disk Management:
ALT-Spacebar key combo (this pops up a menu) |
X key (selects Maximize) |
Drag the field separators (such as between Status and Capacity) to show entire field. This is very important, otherwise, needed info is not visible.

Make a snapshot:
WIN | type SNIPPING | ENTER
Click the New button.
Drag the cursor around the area you want to snip.
File | Save as | select save location and name | Save button

Post the snapshot:

You can allocate more space for restore points if you desire since you've got room there now.

Do we need to continue on cleaning up efforts? Most further cleaning would involve your deleting programs which you feel that you no longer need, disabling hibernation (if it is enabled).

Thank you! I can go through the installed programs and uninstall the ones I don't really need, shall I use CClealener's uninstaller for it? Hibernation is enabled but I use it quite often.

Since you use hibernation, then leave it on.

Actually, I've never used CCleaner's program uninstall feature. I've always used Revo Uninstaller Pro.

That said, the normal Win 7 program uninstall feature will work fine.

Just a few more questions if you don't mind.. what's your opinion on disk fragmentation and free-space-sweeping tools (CCleaner has this option too), do I have to do anything with these?
And a question which isn't related that much: I searched this forum about my problems with the external cd/dvd drive and the printer both of them refuse to work with Win7 computers. I haven't really found relevant topics but I'd like to know if these things are simply not compatible with Win7 or I'm doing something wrong. I don't want to nag you about this problem too, there are probably threads about these already, it's possible that I just haven't found them.

Disk defragmentation can help if the disk is very fragments. Defragmentation is over-rated. The built-in Windows Defragmenter (WIN | type Disk Defragmenter | ENTER) works fine. To get a warm, puppy-dog feel about what's happening, then Defraggler from Piriform (the CCleaner people) is free. Defraggler - File and Disk Defragmentation - Free Download

For the other two problems, I suggest starting two new threads--one for the cd/dvd and the other for the printer.

That way we will get those with possible direct experience with your hardware.

I do suggest always trying the Fix It Solution Center first.

Another approach to troubleshooting, is to use troubleshooters in the Control Panel.

I do not know the Hungarian names, but here's the english:
Win | type Troubleshooting | ENTER
and then choose the relevant trouble-shooter.

If it's an XP or Vista-era printer, try installing it's full software package in Compatibility Mode if you need scanning capability from/to the desktop. In this case it will need to be allowed into Startup programs.

If you don't, then try installing just the Latest driver from the Canon Support Downloads webpage to see if it will at least print. If not try installing an XP driver in Compat Mode.

Have you enabled auto-updating for your hardware to get Win7 drivers via optional Windows Updates? If not do so now and check optionals. Automatically get recommended drivers and updates for your hardware

As Karl says you can also try the Printer troubleshooter by rightclicking on the Printer in Start>Printers and Devices.
