I've trie3d Windows 7 backup, but I no longer wish to use it. I have another method for backup.
How do I release the external drive? It is still owned by Windows 7.

It should have never been owned by Windows 7. If I understand your question, it is simply an external drive that you use. You can delete the backups that windows made if you want to. You can also go to control panel-backup and restore and turn off messages about backups. An external hard drive is really no different than a usb thumb drive. you can use it for something, erase it and use it for something else. If you are having issues with permissions, write back and we will help with that.
