Hi,

The scenario is an office with multiple workstations, 1 ADSL fixed IP connection, domain member workstations peer-to-peer through a switch. The domain server is at a remote location. I want to RDP into a specific workstation. What I've been considering are the following - maybe/hopefully there is a better way.

1) Multihome the target computer so users can RDP direct to it but also be on the LAN. This should be fine but the problem is then how do the other boxes get an internet connection?

2) Install Windows Server on the target box or some other one in the office and use RRAS/VPN to connect.

Thoughts/suggestions appreciated.

Hello,

If you are thinking of having a Windows Server just to do remote access, you'll to configure Remote Desktop Services (previously known as Terminal Services) and buy CALS and can be very pricey.

It might be inexpensive to try business remote programs such as LogMeIn, GoToAssist, etc., more selections here. There's no need for to buy a server and the configuration is pretty simple.

Remote Desktop on a client OS such as Windows 7 is limited to 1 active user at a time. For multiple users you would need Terminal services on a server OS and a client access license for each client. A third party alternative may do what you want.

FWIW: The non-profit that I volunteer for has a SSL gateway installed that then allows me to RDP into any machine on the corporate network. I use the SSL gateway and then put the IP for the local computer such as 192.168.2.94 and then connect and log onto the local machine with that IP, the machine name can also be used. Works and does not require Terminal Services licenses.
