Remote Connect to a DVR

Hello,

My network has a Windows Server 2008, a Linksys WRT320N router and a DVR and about 8 other computers.
My network connects to the internet via a public ip. My aim is to remote access the DVR.
I have used no-ip.com to assign a hostname to my public ip. But I'm not sure how to port forward the DVR. Should I do it on the router or server?
Please advise if my approach is wrong

Hello,

You will need to find all the Port Numbers that your DVR (pls locate the manual) needs that you'll port-forward from the router.

I don't have to set anything on the server?

I'm googling all the info I can get on this scenario. I have to admit I haven't logged into the router when its part of a network with a server. Don't they both have the same gateway? Am I wrong conceptually?

Yep, I have the ports for my DVR from the manual.

I'm sorry, but what I forgot to mention is the router my ISP provided.The Linksys router was added to the network by the guy before me (I'm guessing what he wanted was an wireless access point). So I just have to log into that router and forward the ports.
I should be able to get the gateway for this router if I enter ipconfig/all in a cmd on my server?

The DVR should have a software that you may download online or a disc that came with it. The router's IP in your case it is 192.168.1.1 shouldn't be the same as your DVR's IP. You will have to assign a Private IP Address to the DVR so that you may access it in your LAN. Why don't you follow the manual and it should guide you with the entire setup. Is there an IT Dept in your company to assist you?

I'm the IT person actually. I'm away from the site right now, so can't update you on any progress. I wanted to make sure I got my concept right

Do you know the login credentials to your Linksys router? You will need it, whoever set it up and never changed the default LogIn, please refer it here. For security purpose, it is always safe to change the Admin password and just keep it to yourself if you're the IT person. The port-forwarding is straight forward, there's a few youtube tutorials that you may find online.

Will definitely update you. I'm planning on setting up Spiceworks on the network as well. For this I'll need port forwarding again.

The network is like this
ISP router(Huawei)->Server, and
-> Switch 24 port,10/100MB Fast Ethernet switch -> Linksys WRT320N

I'll be port forwarding on the Huawei.

If the DVR is connected to the switch, then it's IP is decided by DHCP at the server. Will that cause a problem?

Which one is handing out your DHCP? Is it coming from the server or ISP's device? You can't have 2 DHCP enabled if using one Subnet.

Yes, the DVR shd be plugged in to the Switch.

This should have been ISP's router> Linksys> Switch> Server/Computers

I ran ipconfig on the server and found that its ip 192.168.10.10 is obtained from the ISP router. I do have access to it and it shows that DHCP is enabled. I logged into a user's computer which has ip 192.168.10.136 ( The ip pool in the server is 192.168.10.100-200) so it obtains its ip from the server.
Any comments?

You may assign a Static IP to the DVR outside the DHCP range. Do you have 2 DHCP enabled (one from the router and from ther server?)

Yes DHCP is enabled on both server and router.

Sorry for the late reply, very busy at work.....

Back to your issue...you can't have 2 DHCP enabled in your network if it's on the same Subnet. You may choose it either enabled it on the router or the server, it will be better to have it enabled in the server and have DNS configured correctly from the Server. I think that it is a good idea to consult an IT Professional to help you properly configured your network.
