I have a vista home premium laptop and I just built a Windows 7 RC desktop. Having previously tried to remote desktop connect into another home premium, I discovered you need either Business or Ultimate edition on the computer you're connecting to. When connecting my home premium vista comp to a Windows 7 computer, which edition of Windows 7 will I need? Thanks guys!

Wha?? Home premium doesn't have remote desktop? Wow, that stinks.. I didn't know that.

Maybe time to look for an alternate solution. Something like UltraVNC perhaps.

All of my systems still run fastest on XP 32-bit for the most part. Win7 is fun to play with, but I still prefer XP for raw speed, security, and functionality.

If a certain version of windows doesn't have the remote dekstop, there is a cool free for personal use program that I use, its called teamviewer, tho it does need to be installed on both computers. You can setup premanent partners, so that when you wanna access that computer remotely it will allow it whether someone is at the other pc or not.

Just built my computer in 12/09
One extra thing to be aware of; windows 7 has RDP 7 (as opposed to the 6.1 in vista) which drastically improves performance; when I was testing RDP 7 to 7 the other day, I was able to watch the bbc iplayer (flash video tv) at native speed in a normal window. There was only a slight stutter when playing fullscreen, which is a major improvement.

I don't know if the RDP 7 client will be backported to vista, but hopefully it will be; 6.1 was backported to XP, as part of SP3 I believe. But if you need high performance over RDP, you may want windows 7 on your client as well as 7 professional or ultimate to host it.

Note, it is possible to hack about with vista home premium, adding a .dll and some registry changes, allowing it to act as an RDP host, but it is a bit of a messy solution! We don't know if or how long it'll take to port the hack to 7.
