Remote Desktop Connection

Hey Guys and Ladies.

I have been having issues setting up my machine for RDC. The times that I've tried connecting to my home computer from my work computer, it keeps asking me for Credentials. I have been looking all over the internet, and in this forum, for how to get those credentials it is asking for or how to disable it. But to no avail, I haven't been able to work around this issue.

I am hoping that maybe one of you can point me to the right direction. I am sorry if this is a duplicate thread, but I couldn't find anything like this on the forum.

This is what I did to set up my RDC:

1. Completely turned off my Windows Firewall (just in case I didn't get the settings correct)
2. Enabled my machine to be controlled remotely
3. Configured my router (did a port forwarding: 3389)
4. Created a Static IP Address
5. Verified my local IP for the RDC

My home computer is running Windows 7 Ultimate and my work computer is running Windows 7 Enterprise.

What am I missing, or what am I doing wrong? I'd like to inform you all that this is my first time trying this RDC option. My IT knowledge is at an entry level.

I think you may need to add the name of your home PC to the RDC user list or add the name of your work PC to the RDC user list on your home PC.



If the computer you want to connect to is using Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 Ultimate, or Windows 7 Enterprise, follow these steps:

1. Open System by clicking the Start button
   
   , right-clicking Computer, and then clicking Properties.
2. In the left pane, click Remote settings.
   
   If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
3. In the System Properties dialog box, under Remote Desktop, select one of the three options, and then click Select Users.
   If you are an administrator on the computer, your current user account will automatically be added to the list of remote users and you can skip the next two steps.
4. In the Remote Desktop Users dialog box, click Add.
5. In the Select Users or Groups dialog box, do the following:
   • To specify the search location, click Locations, and then select the location you want to search.
   • In Enter the object names to select, type the name of the user that you want to add, and then click OK.
   The name will be displayed in the list of users in the Remote Desktop Users dialog box.

You can’t connect to a computer that's asleep or hibernating, so make sure the settings for sleep and hibernation on the remote computer are set to Never.
You can't use Remote Desktop Connection to connect to a computer using Windows 7 Starter, Windows 7 Home Basic, or Windows 7 Home Premium.

Hi Chev,

Thank you for your response. I believe I found what my issue was. So, if anyone were to encounter the same problem I did, this is what you do to solve it...

I went into the Windows Firewall Settings-->Advanced Settings-->Create an Inbound Rule (This means that I kept my Windows Firewall enabled).

Rule Type: Port
Apply to TCP and specify the 3389 local port
Action: Allow the connection
Profile: I kept all options here (Domain, Private, and Public)
Name: I named it Remote Desktop Connection (you can name it to whatever you'd like)

I hope this helps someone. Remember, before I did this... I did the above steps that I mentioned on my first post.

This tutorial shows the firewall rule being created using the GUI. If you followed the tutorial I posted you would not have to create the firewall rule manually. The link is at the bottom of my first post in this thread. The GUI and tutorial does all this for you.

3. Under Remote Assistance, put a check mark on Allow Remote Assistance connections to this computer.
Note: This automatically adds Remote Desktop exception to Windows Firewall.
