Solved Remote Desktop Fail Inside Home Network

My home network has 4 wired computers (all Win 7 Pro) which I access using Remote Desktop Connection when I'm going to be out of my office for extended periods. I have done this before, but it's been a while. The steps I take to get it running are:
1. Go to control panel - System - Remote Settings and click on the radio button to allow connections.
2. In windows firewall a create a rule for allow inbound connections on a port other than the default port
3. I change the RDP port in the registry to the same value set in 2.
4. I set up port forwarding rules in my dsl router to forward incoming connections to the correct ports.

I have verified that the above works connecting to one of the computers from outside my home network. Inside my home network I am able to connect using RDP to 3 or the four computers. For some reason one of them isn't working; I just never get a response from it. What else can it be?

That sounds like a lot of steps to get that working. You do that each time when you are going to be out of the office?

I would prefer to use something like TeamViewer to access my home computers while I'm out. TeamViewer is free and works very well.

Built my first computer (8Mhz 8088cpu, 640K RAM, 20MB HDD, 2 360K floppy drives) in 1985 and have been building them for myself, relatives and friends ever since.
Does that computer fails only when accessed though internet (using the router's port forwarding) or it also fails when trying to connect from another computer within the network?
Try fixing that connection first, use any other of the 3 to connect to the faulty one, see if they can ping, if the can telnet on that port, and if not, most likely there is a firewall problem or a mismatch in the port numbers. Else, look at the router port forwarding if it match the IP/port. Another thing to look would be that every one has a static local IP.

I've used browser based remote access before, but I just prefer remote desktop. I think the image quality is better.

The first step is to make sure it will connect inside the network and at the moment one of the computers cannot be accessed from inside the network even those three others can be. I have tested access on one of the machines from outside, and it works, and as I mentioned, I've done this before and I just gone through all of the setups on four machines; three work and one doesn't. I've double checked and they're all set the same.

Turns out that I had configured the inbound rule in the filewall to "allow if secure" instead of just "allow" and this was what was blocking it. Thanks for taking the time to answer my post.

Where were you able to change this? I am having a similar issue.

Click on start, right click on computer, select properties, then click on remote settings. Click on the middle radio button.
