Remote Desktop: "The local policy of this system does not permit you t

Hello,

Running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit at home. Am wanting to create a remote desktop session to a Windows XP desktop at work. (This is done via SSL VPN). This had been functioning well for many months, but recently stopped working in the following way. I can still reach the network at work, and can open the remote desktop session to my PC at work. However, when I attempt to login to my work PC in the RDP session, I get the following error:

"The local policy of this system does not permit you to logon interactively"

Several questions:
- I assume this is referring to the policy on the local client machine (the one at home)?
- I had not knowingly made any changes to my home PC, so unsure why this happened.
- Home Premium, from what I understand, should be able to act as client to any Windows 7/XP?
- I've read that my local user Id group policy might have become 'corrupted', or inadvertently been set to 'deny' in terms of being able to act as a remote desktop user. Is this possible? The problem is: Home Premium doesn't offer Remote Desktop configuration? The Remote tab on System properties is blank on the bottom.
... Is there any way for me to check (and set) my local user as being allowed to use remote desktop services?

You are trying to connect from your home to your work's computer, an IT person from your work should take care of this task for you. Is this a possible request from your work?

Unfortunately, the IT group is not providing any further support on this for me. They say the problem lies with my home PC. This might very well be the case ... if in fact my local user has had a policy value incorrectly set. I just don't know how to check what the policy settings might be ... and worse, I believe Home Premium explicitly blocks access to the settings (?). Control Panel / System / Remote : this tab doesn't show 'Remote Desktop' settings in the lower portion of the tab (where I would normally be able to check the remote desktop configuration settings?).

That's unfortunate that your IT Dept can't assist you.

Just to let you know if you are try to do this yourself without a permission it might put you it a really bad position. I'd be persistent have your IT people setup your RDC to work so that you won't be at risk.

Sounds like you lost permission to your desktop at work. Have them check to ensure you have at LEAST remote desktop group access on your local computer.

They might have audited local administrative policies and removed non admins from said group. In that case, if you indeed have PERMISSION to RDP to a work computer, they need to ensure you have the correct local rights to do so.

Are you a member of the Remote Desktop User group on the computer you are trying to RDP to?
