Remote features not working -remote desktop, WMC, iTunes remote, etc.

OS: Win8 64bit (My desktop is Win8, my laptop is Win7. We're dealing with the desktop here.)
Where I am: university network, but these features seem to be working with my laptop.
Things I've checked: allowing services through Windows Firewall (Bonjour, WMC services, etc.)
Allowing remote services in System Properties
Many, many existing threads and non-solutions
How I'm feeling:

None of these features or applications work, and they're all supposed to function differently from one another (e.g. WMC doesn't use the Apple Bonjour service, so it isn't a program-specific problem). I just want to control my media system with my desktop
Is there some obscure service or file or setting that I'm missing that could prevent any remote applications?

It's a bit of a sticky situation regarding remote desktop usage, as I'm on my university network. I know this, however:
1) I was unable to remote into my desktop using university guidelines for remote desktop usage.
2) Remote desktop did not work on my desktop prior to bringing it to university, but folders shared over the same network did function (I used a shared folder to transfer large files from desktop to laptop instead of using bandwidth for cloud services).

My main objective at the moment is to get iTunes and WMC working, but being able to use my desktop remotely from class would also be very useful.

So you were at home and tried the send/receive files from "computer with wmc/itunes/remote desktop".... that worked(?)

First make it work locally at home please. DISABLE firewall on "computer with wmc/itunes/remote desktop" and on the machine that tries to access it. Does it work then? If so: Aftwerwards ENABLE firewall on on the machine that tries to access it. Test again. Post results and tell which of the firewalls is the culprit

Yes, I was able to make a shared folder over my LAN.

Unfortunately, I won't be home again until the next holiday, so I can't test this on anything other than my university network

I did try to remote into my desktop again with the firewalls off using the established procedures from my university network's admins, and that didn't work.

I just tried disabling IPv6, as I read that it can cause problems with Win8 and these remote features. No dice.

My main objective at this point is just to get my iTunes remote to function properly... I almost just want to clean install Win8, but I don't even know if that will fix the problem and it's such a hassle.

Another clue: I upgraded from Win7 to Win8 without a clean install.

How can you put the firewall OFF at home (you're nit at home!)

Please send me a private message with the ip-address you try to connect to. I mean the ip-address of home remote desktop server. Is that server running now?

Can you divulge the established procedures from your universities network admins? Do they provide you with a VPN or what's going on here? Can you ping your machine? There is likely alot going on between your remote machine and your target machine that can cause issues here.

Argh... I'm so dumb. I was using an ethernet cable to connect my desktop to my dorm's network, which is apparently different from the wifi network. I popped in a USB wifi adapter and now all my remote features are working. The simple stuff always gets you.
