Remove working program icon in taskbar

I just want to ask a simple question regarding PC taskbar.

When I start a program, its icon will show at the taskbar, for example I play LoL, I will have a LoL Icon on my taskbar to show that this program is running.

Now my question is, how to I hide this icon (or any icon in my case) so that it will not show itself on the taskbar? That I could just use Alt tab to get back to it.

Thank you.

I'm using windows 7, and the program is running, so you can't unpin it.

I downloaded/ran the reg file but all it did was remove the pinned programs (not used). But when I start using a program, it pins itself to the taskbar.

I want to run a program and it not to be pinned in the taskbar.

Using your method, and describing it effects from the image that I've added to the thread. The "D" logo (Between Skype and "L") was removed from the taskbar as it was pinned by me and it wasn't running. But when I ran the program "D" it will show itself in the taskbar again just like the Skype and "L" logos from my image.

Please help

Hi all,
For what I know it's possible to make invisible: Folders and
shortcuts.
That kind of tweak you want I think is only possible with
software.
But there's things you can do to make invisible folders and
shortcuts:

Change the folder Icon to invisible:
1) Right click the folder and choose properties.
2) Click on the Customize Tab.
3) Choose Change Icon at the bottom

You'll have to be at the system icons root:
%SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll
4) Once you get the window with all the different icons,
scroll to the 13th column. There you will see some white
spaces instead of icons. Select 1 of the 4 blank spaces and
click Ok.
Removing name:
Before you start, make sure that your folder options are set
so file extensions are not shown.

Press ALT and hold ALT- while holding use the number pad to
enter the number(s) for your symbol.
ALT + 0160 and ALT + 255 will do a simple blank space, and
If you face with a not deletable folder you'll have to use a
program like unlocker.

Remenber:
You're inputting characters when pushing those buttons,
meaning you cannot have duplicates in the same directory.
Make sure you do not use the same key combination twice.

Invisible Non-Folder Icons:
1) Find the icon you want to make invisible. Right click, and
choose create shortcut.
2) Right click on the shortcut and choose properties.
3) Make sure you are the Shortcut tab. Once you are there,
choose Change Icon at the bottom of the window.
4) Once you get the window with all the different icons,
scroll to the 13th column. There you will see some white
spaces instead of icons. Select 1 of the 4 blank spaces and
click Ok.

Remove shortcut arrow:
BACK UP YOUR REGISTRY
1. Open Regedit (click Start type regedit into search
box & double click regedit.exe)
2. Navigate to:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT -> lnkfile (LNKFILE)
3. Delete the following key “IsShorcut”
4. Close REGEDIT and Restart your computer.
NOTE.. After making this change it is necessary for
you to RESTART your machine before the new settings will take
effect.

You could get an Objectbar such as this:
Mr-Ragnarok's deviantART Gallery
It will replace the taskbar and offer a lot more functionality akin to the Mac bar. It will perform the way you are wanting if you don't mind the different style. Bars like this are highly customizable as well. They just have a small learning curve to adjust to.

Edit: I serendipitously came across this today. It does what you are wanting, hides the opened program/folder from showing on the taskbar.

Hope that helps.
