removing norton

After putting up with Norton's stupid technical support I trashed it and got Avira Premium Suite. Norton would not load correctly on my development machine and it would not uninstall either. lol The game me the usual run-a-around. I had to hunt and peck for files and then used Registry Crawler to get rid of there stuff. Aarrgg!

Sorry you had a bad experience. I don't know why they didn't direct you to the Norton Removal Tool. It has always worked when the regular uninstaller fails.

Hi McSeven

Sorry to hear of your recent frustration.

After doing some research I found that the two main reasons that could have caused you problems with the norton install are:
  • Trying to install norton onto a system that has an RC version OS, and one instance of failure on an RTM version, but your specs. list shows a finished version of win7.
  • The other, and more pressing reason is incompatible drivers.
How did your development machine work before you installed norton, were you having any stability problems?

One last thought...And a question that has to be asked, did you make sure you had the latest norton 2010, and it was the x64 version before you tried to install?

How is your Avira working? I found one instance of this:
The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect.”
Doing a google search found this:
The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. - Google Search

Without going into it further that may be another reason why norton gave you trouble, it's side by side config was incorrect.

My norton was already pre-installed bloatware, and I dreaded when the time came to uninstall it, but luckily for me it was pretty much frustration proof just took a little time is all.

With the 2009 version I should have said. I had communicated with a peticular individual from Norton technical support and he was very rude.

Hi! pepper03, welcome to W7F :)
That's good news.

After reading up on how to remove norton I kept seeing how many other users were having problems, and hoped that I could avoid them to.

p.s. Thank You to the Mod that marked my thread solved!

I know Norton had a bad reputation as a resource hog and not very effective overall but the new Norton 360 is probably the best piece of anti virus anti malware out there now!
Don't let past prejudices lead your decisions this is a great software suite! The backup alone is worth it.

With the release of N360 v4 the product caught up with NIS 2010, but I'm wondering if NIS 2011 is going to pull ahead again? Seems to me the only significant feature N360 adds to the mix is the online backup, but there are a number of free 2 gig online backup solutions available. I also happen to prefer the NIS interface, but over all I agree that the Norton line has dramatically improved and is competing at the front of the line, alongside ESET, etc. I have installed and uninstalled NIS 2009 and 2010 quite a few times on a number of machines and haven't had problems. That doesn't negate that some people still do, but you have look at the big picture and remember that even with a very good piece of software there will be problems for a small percentage of users.

As far as phone support goes I suggest avoiding it whenever possible for all security software products. Online chat or message forums are more effective because they remove issues of bad call quality, difficulty understanding the accents of people in other countries, etc. Online chat is particularly effective because there is often an option to allow the technician to connect to your system and fix the problems directly.

I may have not made myself clear when I replied to pepper03.

I have no doubt that norton is a fine program, and we had absolutly no problems with it during the trial, but it is an economical decision on our part, being that my DW, and me are on fixed incomes.

I didn't care about other user's general gripe's about problems, my concern was with how smoothly I could accomplish its removal.

Very sage advice.......

I dropped it for economical reasons as well.

The trial was over and I switched to the one Cox provides for no charge.

The removal took about an hour. I used the download from the Norton website to remove the program and then cleaned up the rest of the files still left manually.

There is a Norton Removal Tool. It is a small free download on Symantec's site.

www.symantec.com/nrt

If using Internet Explorer, it will ask you if you trust and want to download the file. Allow the download to be downloaded.

Actually my ISP provides it at no charge so I do understand the economics of it! I haven't tried the online back-up because I use Carbonite. The back-up feature I used was to an external USB drive and it worked very well.

I'm using NIS 2010 and it found a lot of threats on my system that my previous protection provider failed to block or tell me about. :(
I definitely recommend Norton! :D

At community.norton.com it is recommended to run Norton Removal Tool twice. After each run reboot your computer.

No need to do anything else unless you find that there are still items left over.

Note: Norton Removal Tool will uninstall all Norton programs installed.
