How can I stop a program form starting up at boot ie Windows Messenger?
Thanks in advance for any guidance.

OS
Windows 7 Ultimate
Type "Msconfig" into search. press enter when "msconfig" is highlighted. Go to startup tab and find the program you do not wish to start. Uncheck it. Hit apply and OK.

WLM also has an option to "start when Windows starts" in the options somewhere I'm sure. I don'y use it.

Msconfig will do the trick

Yes, most programs have a setting but msconfig is a great tool, but be careful....you don't want to uncheck anything you aren't sure about. I unchecked a mouse driver one time and it took me a lot of work to find out why my mouse was not working right. There are things in there you don't want to mess with. Make sure you know what the program is.....look at the .exe

Here is what I use instead of msconfig.

Autoruns for Windows

Autoruns is just one of many utilities available from sysinternals, from Microsoft.

Never hurts to have options.

Thanks in advance for any guidance.

You can do this Job if you install Ccleaner. This application is totally freeware. you can disable all unwanted startup application and many more...like temporary files cleaner, registry cleaner even you can uninstall unwanted applications as well.
Try once if you really needed.

Msconfig is a very good solution. Another method, and sometimes suggested as the way to go, is services. Possibly you may want to type services into search and use it in conjunction with msconfig. In any event good luck and enjoy
