Hi there, everytime I try to rename one folder i got message:
This is no longer located in C:/ bla bla
Verify the items location and try again.

When i click on Try again button win 7 finally renames a folder....is this a bug in the latest RTM release?

anybody with a fix?

Hello Miro, welcome.

Is it just with the one folder? Or all of them?

Hello Miro, and welcome to Seven Forums.

It sounds like you may have a bad installation. You might see if doing a repair install can fix this for you without losing anything.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

This has been reported a lot with those that had did a upgrade to Windows 7 from Vista or a previous build of Windows 7, so a repair install should fix it for you without you losing anything. :)

Hiya all!
Let me guess... There is no folder called "Public" inside yours "C:\Users", am i right?
You, guys using some third party registry cleaning software, am i right again?
Is this software is JV16 PowerTools?

There is no need in painful reinstall! Only things you need is:

1. Create folder named "Public" in "C:\Users"
2. Create a new .txt document on desktop.
3. Copy and paste the following lines into this .txt file:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\WOW6432Node\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\profilelist]

"Public"="%SystemDrive%\\Users\\Public"
"Public"="%SystemDrive%\\Users\\Public"

4. Save and close .txt
5. Rename .txt file to, for example, shitfix.reg and run it. Windows will ask you - are you sure? Answer positively - Yes.
6. Enjoy!

thanks Petr0id you are Lord, how on earth do you know this stuff?!

i am using win7 64 ultimate on two different machines both virgin installs on brand new drives, and my network share is on winxp pro on a 3rd machine. I have been having htis problem for ages and it was doing my nut in. this morning i decided to rename 70 folders and about 1 in 5 was not renaming due to this error, but it's sunday morning, all my machines were turned off last night and this is the first job i decided to do so there is no way any files were in use by anything.

I followed your instructions as best i could although i DID have a public folder, i made my file called fix.txt and renamed it shiftfix.reg (cos i only just noticed you called it shitfix ha ha ha), ran it and now those 10 or so folders that wouldn't rename all renamend first time, you just made my life better thank you :-)

doh so i tried to go through and finish renaming the restof the folders and still had 6 that would not rename even after the above fix worked, so i renamed the file shiftfix.reg and ran it again and they then renamed. i dont know what the problem is or why this woould work, but thought i would share.

So JV16 PowerTools whacked the links in the Registry?

@petr0id,
Why is this line "Public"="%SystemDrive%\\Users\\Public" needed twice?

I've been getting the same error since last week.
It only has started since I relocated user folders to a different drive.
Cant remember if I did it through registry, rclick>properties>location, or mklink /d
Either way, I do believe it has something to do with this...
Just an FYI.
