How do i change multiple file extensions name all at once? I have all MKV file and would like to change it in to AVI. This process is taking far too long. Is there a shortcut to this? other than renaming each individual file.
Thankyou

You need a bulk file renamer. It could replace the text string "mkv" with the text string "avi" for all files in a folder or group of subfolders. Or instead, you could ask it to remove the last 3 characters of the name and replace them with "avi".

I use NameItYourWay and it works very well, but I'm not sure it is easily found on the Internet anymore. However, there are other similar programs out there that work the same way.

Once you understand it, you could rename a thousand files in a minute.

I use FreeCommander (file manager) for mass renaming.

It also has a stack of file/folder management features that Windows Explorer doesn't have.

If they're all in the same folder use the following line in a command prompt:

ren *.mkv *.avi

If there are any duplicates you'll get an error message...

The easiest way to get the command prompt to open up in the correct folder is to hold the shift key while right-clicking on the folder that contains the files you want renaming and selecting "Open command window here".
