in XP, there is an option to Repair a wireless network connection - basically it just disables the adapter then reconnects. i use it frequantly.

i don't see anything like this in 7. is it still around?

Hi garbanzo,

Yeah, right click on the network icon at the bottom right of the taskbar and click Troubleshoot Problems.

Or open up the Network and Sharing Center and do it from there. You can click on your connection and click diagnose.

thanks for the fast reply, Airbot!

i tried the Troubleshoot Problems bit, but it didn't seem to do disable my adapter as Repair does in XP. in fact, it doesn't seem to do anything at all since my connection is technically working when i use it. i have found that using Repair in XP does something to kick it back into gear when it gets slow. Troubleshoot in 7 doesn't have the same effect :(

no, i know what he's talking about. i understand ya garbanzo. Its just not like that anymore with 7. you're probably looking at either a batch file, or from cmd manually. Personally, i dont lose much without it, as it was good and bad. Alot of the times either hanging up the system and/or giving the adapter a "ghost" ip of the 169.xx variety. Some times even a hard boot would not release it besides trying to renew/release. I think the quick disabling and enabling of the adapter was part of the problem imo.

This thread may be dead, but for what it's worth, i am pretty disappointed that the "repair" no longer seems available. I used it frequently when my connection would seem to be lagging and it usually helped avoid having to do a modem/router restart. pretty bummed to have lost that option, but it does seem that disabling and enabling is the best way to get the same effect now. good luck.

if your adapter is usb, there is a utility that will allow you to reset it via disable/enable from a gui or via command line, it's at NirSoft - freeware utilities: password recovery, system utilities, desktop utilities, called usbdview and comes in x86 and x64 flavours. in the gui you can select the line item for the adapter & right click to select 'disable/enable' or you can hit F4. can also run from command line in a batch file. i have it on my desktop for quick access, tho i haven't needed it recently...with my old belkin router it was sometimes the only way to shock the connection back into use if it went wonky, with my new netgear it hasn't been needed.

I second what GarrettTV wrote. The enable / disable was a frequent quick fix for a balky network connection. Not needed for a decent network like we have at work, but definitely for the Home Office class routers.

Agreed, shame it's gone, I used it quite a bit also; I agree, sometimes it did 'not respond' but other times it did fast quick the problem and I could instantaneously reconnect. Wonder what Microsoft's reasoning was here....a shame.

they've replaced it with 'troubleshoot problems', which is a long-winded version. it will eventually rest the adapter after checking thru it's internal check-list, but i'm not very fond of it as it also will change any custom tcpip settings as it goes thru it. i use usbdeview to just rest the adapter if needed.

I too noticed the lack of a repair function in Win7, but I looked into a batch file solution because I always had to use ipconfig fixing this problem, or that problem in my home network.
I came up with this batch file after some google-fu. It actually does more than the old repair function from XP did. As far as I can tell the batch file does the next best thing to an uninstall-reboot-reinstall of the adapter/NIC in the device manager. It releases and then renews the DHCP leases, then it clears the DNS, ARP, and NetBIOS caches.

Code:
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
netsh interface ip delete arpcache
nbtstat -R

On a slightly silly note: Is it thread necromancy(I am such an RPG nerd) if it's only been 4 months?

I know this is an old thread, but it is one of the first results when I searched for "Windows 7 Repair Network" The repair command in Windows XP was incredibly useful, and the ipconfig solutions provided are just not the same. I use it alot since my wireless adapter goes crazy sometimes after standby or hibernation. The solution I ended up with is this simple batch file which will bring back the "Repair Network" feel we all long for:

Code:
@echo off
echo Repairing...
netsh interface set interface "Wireless Network Connection" DISABLED
ping localhost -n 2 > nul
netsh interface set interface "Wireless Network Connection" ENABLED

Just copy the above lines into a .BAT or .CMD file and run it to "Repair" your connection just like the good old days.
**Your network adapter may not be called "Wireless Network Connection" so change that if it is something else. This gets me going much faster than Troubleshoot or Disconnect/Reconnect from the network that I would always have to do after standby. I just put the batch file in my Personal Folder and made a shortcut on the desktop right next to the status bar so I don't have to see that .bat extension in the name (Obsessive?? maybe a little...) Hope this helps somebody! It will at least help me when I forget all about it and search for it in a year or two...
