Solved Repair Install Hang

I started a repair install which seemed to be going slow. It got to the point in the pic below. It has been hung here for about 7 hours. If I reboot will the install go in the dumper? Pass, punt, or kick?

Hiya Gary ... disconnect the network . Get the updates later, after completion of the installation.

Still, 7 hours is a big deal :sarc:

If you force reboot, I guess it will be started from this point when the computer will be started again ! If you stop the installation, it will take another large time to be rolled back.

Go for a clean install ?

Hiya Harvey It's not getting updates at this point, it's transferring my data and programs to the repaired install. I think.
The last repair install I did was around 30 minutes in all.

At reboot it should offer a menu to Roll back or continue Repair install. I'd try Archie's idea first to disconnect from network to see if it's updates that are holding you up.

If you need to roll back then you can look for stalled Win7 log file location to see what were the last entries which will provide a strong clue for what caused the hang.

If you face a rescue situation you can get into Win7 to access or copy out externally files including logs using Copy & Paste - in Windows Recovery Console or Paragon rescue disk to recover data.

Then Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 which steps are the same for retail.

I'll be dipped. I pulled the ethernet cable and it immediately went to reboot to complete install. I have learned a new thing, thanks Greg and Archie!
Still going slow, I'll let you know how it goes in a bit.

Good news. Has it progressed past where it was before?

Very good news! It is finished and no activation hassles this time. Downloading 89 updates now.
It is horribly slow with everything, reboot about 4 minutes, IE taking 30-40 seconds to open....
When it does restart it tells me every time it has installed the nVIDIA HD audio driver.

If this persists I would check the logs and System Resources for clues: Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7

I would also uninstall the Nvidia sound package and wait for optional Windows Updates to deliver only the driver. Did you import any other drivers without first checking performance? Always run with the Intsaller and optional Windows Updates drivers until performance dictates changing them.

If probs persist or you have less than perfect performance I would get a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 which steps are the same for retail.

thanks again Greg, a couple runs of CCleaner and its reg cleaner did the trick, seems okay now. Whew!
I was premature on that. I guess I have some Klingon translating to do.

I did have this before starting the install

Upgrading Windows will affect the following devices and/or programs:

• These programs might not work properly after the upgrade. We recommend uninstalling these programs before upgrading. Cancel the upgrade, open Control Panel, and search for "uninstall a program". (Note: Programs marked as * can be safely reinstalled after the upgrade.)

I didn't/don't have that anywhere in my program files though. Many Event viewer entries point to "ASUS COM service" not starting or not starting in a timely manner. This too is absent from any program files.How can I clear the events to see the relevant ones?

If it's turned on in msconfig>Startup or >Services then the Catalyst bloatware can remain there after uninstall as a live key. Try searching the Registry at Regedit>File>Find and Find Next.

It might also be an element of the driver package that Upgrade Advisor misinterpreted. I've seen it before.

It was on in Services set to Auto start so I disabled it and run the reg search and found several ATI entries and ditched them. Still 4-5 minutes in Shutting Down on reboots, so I'm heading to a clean install.
