I am having a strange problem with my PC freezing and having to hard reset with no error log records or ways to narrow it down. I am thinking of doing a repair install to try to fix the issue. I need to know what all would be lost during a repair install so that I can prepare for it. Is there any sort of list to give me an idea of what will be preserved and what will be deleted?

Just to be safe, make sure all your data is backed up, make a list of every program on your pc, backup your Internet Explorer favorites list.

Make an image of windows before you start, even if the OS is messed up now.

Is it also freezing after doing clean startup? http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorial...ation-conflicts-performing-clean-startup.html

Please fill in your specs in the bottom left corner of your post.

Is this factory preinstalled Win7 which is the worst possible install you can have. If so I would consider doing what most tech enthusiasts do to Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 to get the best possible install. At the minimum I'd Clean Up Factory Bloatware .

If not compare the install in the tutorial with yours to see how close you come to having a perfect install, and observe the tips which work best for keeping one.

You can also go over your install closely with these Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7

I have multiple computers. The one with the problem is a:
ROG - G74SX
CPU: i7
Ram: 8GB
OS: Windows 7 Premium

Thanks for the first link, it is an OEM version and my physical copy is for home :D. I uninstalled factory bloatware before I had this computer for a full day, though Asus really didn't install much.

I will try that soon as I am able to. Though may be a bit before I get results as freezes randomly happen with no real norm on how long it takes

Perhaps I should post some more info about my problem, maby someone has had this before...

  • When it freezes I am unable to do anything but it maintains its current state
  • It will maintain the picture on the monitor and all devices connected will still have power but removing them will not allow me to plug them back in and still get power
  • There are no records in the error log about what happened
  • I just completely uninstalled and reinstalled my Nvidia graphics driver it didn't solve the problem
  • SFC /Scannow found an issue but could not fix it
  • When I am playing music the PC will NOT freeze only when the music stops will it freeze
  • It will not freeze when playing games either
  • It freezes when CPU usage is light only (Internet browsing or changing windows)
  • It began when a bad laptop battery I bought was crapping out and would randomly stop powering the laptop causing quite a few unexpected shutdowns.
It is a rather strange problem =/ It isn't a virus either.
