hi there

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this plea...

About a week ago i removed Explot:Java/CVE-20100840.JA and TrojanDownloader@Java/Openconnection using MSE. 3 days ago I was attaching a word document to a hotmail email and the system froze and never woke up. I used the power button to close the machine down. Since then I have attempted the startup repair tool on multiple times. On 3 occassions this was successful - at these times I have repeated the virus check and been able to backup my files on an external drive. However, after installing various microsoft security updates I can't get the system up and running again. Any ideas about how I can get the system booted up again so I can more the malware programme which a lot of postings are recommending?

any advice greatfully reaceived!! Starting to get a little frantic

Have you tried several tools to make sure you're clean?
I just dealt with something like this over the weekend on a client system and found the MSE was interfering with the process.

1st: as many many of us say, the best bet is to save your valuables, zero-nuke the hard drive, and reinstall.

That said, I would update malwarebytes definitions IF you can do so safely, and also download & install 'superantispyware' or spybot S&D if you have some expertise... the latter is complicated.
then I would reboot, F8, Safe Mode no networking, and make darn sure when the system comes up that MSMPeng.exe is NOT RUNNING. stop it, disable it... whatever.
then run malwarebytes full scan and see what it finds. take the remediation steps. then run one of the others.

Rootkits can/will damage OS files.
Curing rootkits, droppers, etc can & will damage OS files sometimes.
My experience over many, many infections/cleanups is that one ends up spending less time, and getting far better results, but wiping/reloading but make sure the wipe is a Secure Wipe, not a delete/reformat.
YMMV

p.s. keep malwarebytes after all is said & done, uninstall the others, use AVAST instead of MSE. turn off malwarebytes realtime features. not needed and not helpful if avast is installed and you use a good modern browser
