Repeating BSODS, different messages

Original original? Windows Vista, but that was a year or two ago.
- an OEM or full retail version?
- OEM = came pre-installed on system
- Full Retail = you purchased it from retailer

two or three years
- What is the age of OS installation (have you re-installed the OS?)
a month or so, and yes, though i guess it could be considered a fresh install - our computer was
dropped and the harddrive needed to be replaced, so it was on that new harddrive that the OS
was installed.


For a day or two this problem has been persisting. they have become more recent as of late.

I can barely use the computer for two minutes (even on safemode) without being BSOD'd.

I believe it has something to do with a virus, but I may be wrong.I say this because some links on google redirect to ad sites.

I am doing this as quickly as I can so I don't get trapped by another BSOD if you need anything else please let me know

some messages i get are

DRIVER IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL
IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL
and a few others I cannot remember

My perfmon says

Error:


An error occured while attempting to generate the report.



The system cannot find the path specified.

Sorry to double post but i forgot to mention that I am doing all of this in safemod w/networking, otherwise it is nearly impossible.

Please don't feel the need to "dumb things down" for me, I consider myself an advanced computer user, I just am not very good with these types of things, but I can learn quickly.

I am appreciative of any help you can give me.

Before you ask, i have installed the latest drivers for everything, but every time i try to run a scan even in safemode i get a BSOD about halfway through.

It may be important or not: I had two more BSODS after the BSOD Dump & System File Collection app did its job

*update* I was finally able to finish a scan, and it detected two things. If anyone wants to know, I am uploading the mbam log and am testing to see if that fixed the problem.

Please though, still take a look at my BSOD minidumps in case this was just coincidental and had nothing to do with the BSODS.

No, that did not fix the problem. After about 20 seconds of starting windows normally,after the "Welcome"screen, I got another BSOD - this time, it was the IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

I'm uploading the dmp file now


EDIT: I think maybe Avast has something to do with it now (before it did not, because i had not installed it, but now when I run avast i get the BSOD) Is this plausible? Don't mind me, i'm just throwing ideas out there.

Probably overstepping my abilities here, but I went ahead and uninstalled Avast! After finding out about certain issues it seems to have with 7 (correct me if I'm wrong, please)

I also ran another scan and found another virus. I'm going to see if I can start it up in normal and run a scan or if I BSOD again.

*UPDATE* I restarted as I said, and lo and behold, about 30 seconds after the desktop appeared, I got another BSOD.
This one had no error message, but it did have a name of a file that I recognized: nfts.sys. I noticed it in the safemode loadup screen where it loads all of the files it needs.

So, i restart yet again and boot up in safemode. As soon as the files finish loading, BAM! Another BSOD.
This time, IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL.

So I restart, AGAIN.
It freezes during the "loading" screen (the blue one after the black screen, but before the safemode desktop appears)

I restart once more, and here I am.


P.S. I notice that loading times for startups have gotten much longer than before I started experiencing these problems.

P.P.S I have attached the two dmp files from these two most recent BSODS.

P.P.P.S I have school tomorrow, so I will be going to sleep now. Please, any help would be much appreciated.

A couple of things I would try.

Do a System Restore.
Type "restore" in the Start/Search Box Click System Restore and choose a restore point when the computer worked.

Do a "clean boot".
Type "msconfig" in the Start/Search box.
Under Services click hide Microsoft Services and turn off everything else.
Under Startup disable everything.
Reboot.
If that solves your problem them go back into msconfig and turn half of the services back on.
Reboot.
If your problem is still solved turn the rest of the services back on and reboot.
If the problem reappears you know there is a problem in one of the services you just turned back on.
Continue disabling/enabling a few services at a time until you find the problem service.
If you get through all the services then do the same for Startup items, enabling/disabling a few at a time until you find the problem.
Note: if you disable/enable the Microsoft Services you will lose any System Restore points you have.


Make a bootable virus rescue disc.
Kaspersky Rescue Disk 10 Download
or
Index of /rescue_cd
Burn either of these to a CD, boot from it and scan your drive. You will need to be connected to the internet, as both of these Rescue Discs will download the latest virus definitions. A wired connection works better than configuring wireless, but a wireless connection is possible if your wireless card/adapter is recognized by the CD. As a bonus, you can surf the net while the CD scans your system.

Make a multi-boot rescue CD.
Use Sardu to make a bootable CD/DVD with multiple virus and disc repair tools.
Download Sardu and follow the instructions to download and burn your choice of virus/system utilities.
SARDU - Shardana Antivirus Rescue Disk Utility

Do an "in place system repair"
While Booted Into Windows insert your Install CD and choose install.
This will rewrite the system files and leave your documents and programs in place.
NOTE!: YOU MUST BE BOOTED INTO WINDOWS! If you boot from the Install CD it will overwrite your programs and documents!
You must also use an install CD that is the same as the system you are repairing. So a Windows 7 Home won't work if you have Windows 7 Ultimate installed. Likewise a Windows 7 CD won't work if you have Windows 7 Service Pack 1 installed.

If all else fails, reinstall Widows to a different hard drive, make sure it's bootable, then connect your main drive as a second drive. That way you can at least save your documents and files.

I am almost positive it is a virus, because whenever I google search, any link that has the word "security" or "antivirus" in it gets forwarded to an ad website, where some others do not. Of course, I can just copy-paste the url into the browser address bar, but if it can reroute my browser, it can probably steal my information too, which is why I have not been doing anything except going in sevenforums.

I am downloading Trinity Rescue Kit (via FTP, which is faster for me than regular HTML) instead of the ones you mentioned, because I have had experience with that particular cd. I had forgotten about it until you metnion rescue cd's, so thank you for reminding me, I guess xD.

I have done multiple system restores, but every time the system reverts to how it was before I did the restore (i.e. it goes back to being BSODD-y and virus-y, with all theprograms effected by the restore restored (ironic, eh?)

In the meantime, I am backing up everything I need onto CD's while I wait for the rescue cd to download. As a last resort I will reinstall windows, because it really pains me to do that.

"Likewise a Windows 7 CD won't work if you have Windows 7 Service Pack 1 installed." Well, that rules me out. I installed it just the other day (a few days before these problems started, so I don't suspect it to be the reason for them)

Nothing I am doing is working. I'm considering just switching over to Linux (no offence.)

I have backed up all the stuff I need, thank you for trying to help.

I love windows and it's difficult for me to come to this decision, but I feel it must be done.

So a Windows 7 Home won't work if you have Windows 7 Ultimate installed. Likewise a Windows 7 CD won't work if you have Windows 7 Service Pack 1 installed.

You can use Win 7 Home Disc on Win 7 Ultimate system when doing repairs. In fact, you can use any Win 7 Editions Disc on Win 7 systems to do repairs.

Thank you, but I had it installed from the shop so I have no windows disc to repair from. I have already made the switch to Ubuntu (sorry to abandon you guys ), so I guess you can go ahead and mark this thread as complete or abandoned or whatever it is you do...
