Report: Goofing Off Online Increases Workplace Productivity

Screwing around on the Internet is the new Solitaire; it’s what you do at the office when the boss isn’t hovering over your shoulder. But is all the secrecy really necessary? A new study doesn’t seem to think so. In fact, the researchers behind the report say that blowing off some steam on Facebook or YouTube makes workers more productive than any other type of break.

The idea has it's merits.

Where it falls down is in the real world - workplaces with unlimited net access tend to have workers who abuse it to the point where productivity is negatively impacted. The typical kneejerk reaction is to then ban all access for all staff, rather than isolate the abusers.

Facebook was the downfall of my mates workplace because of a few individuals who abuse the privilege.

As long as these workers can take a 10 minute break and get on facebook and do what they need to do and then get back to work. The problem starts when that 10 minutes goes to 20-40-60+ minutes.

I visit sites like this during my workday, but since I do systems admin and desktop support stuff for a living, at least my reading is related directly to my job.
