The scales(?) icon isn't very intuitive.

It should be replaced with a "+Rep" or (since everyone allegedly uses Facebook) a "Like" button.

Im down for a rep or like button. I mean its not like rep means that much but it is nice to receive gratitude for your time and effort.

My two €-cents:

I have a principle never to rep anyone who I have seen begging the rep, be it in a sig, included in a post or in a visitor or private message sent to me. However good posts you make, however strongly I feel you should deserve rep from your post, if you have begged it I will not give it. Rep giving should be totally voluntary and transparent.

I also feel no obligation to "return the favor", automatically rep you when (if) you have repped me. The reputation points are not and most definitely should not be the reason we do this, why we are here. We are here out of interest in computing in general and Windows in particular, telling and sharing about our Windows usage, getting help for our issues and helping others to the extent each of us is capable and willing to do. Not counting insulting, racist or discriminating posts, the rep begging is in my honest opinion about as low as you can go.

I totally accept that you are not interested in my opinion and principles but even so, let me just say this one more time: Please accept that you will not get any rep from me if your sig includes something like "If I helped please rep me" or if you send me a PM linking to your new tutorial and asking me to rep it. No way.

Do a good work, see to that your posts are factual and informative, do not base your advice in "I've heard that...", admit when you do not know something, follow your OPs through their issues until the issue is solved or it is clear that you cannot assist anymore, do not think that you own a thread where you were first to respond but instead allow other members to join in with their sometimes different approaches. The rep will come, it is so profoundly ridiculous to blame the size, shape or style of the rep button for missing rep. If you have earned it, it will come.

Good on you Kari I am of the same mind, and in any case I thought it was against the rules an sort of smacks of lack of confidence and self esteem in oneself to have to go asking for it. Plus it is almost like the homeless person on the street with the cap held out

I mean if you are good or make some contribution and someone thinks that way then rep but I see the badges and stuff as a by the by to actually taking part in this forum. But good luck to those who have done well and that includes stormy who ha helped me In the past.

The issue is not begging for rep so much as assuring that those who get help here visually see there's a way to thank the volunteers.

A "Like" button would be more immediately self-explanatory because almost no one other than tech forum junkies know that there is such a thing as a rep system or how they would begin to go about using it.

That's a very good point. I do however back the 'Like' button idea.

Rep is normally what boosts most members motivation to post reply's and quality topics on a Forum.

That may be true for you but be careful about assuming it is true for others. It isn't for me and there are plenty of others I'm reasonably sure feel the same as I do.
