They look more like bricks but a "chip" is old "American" for pooh.

Joan, as a side note, dried buffalo chips were widely used as fuel for fires by American Indians, cowboys, hunters and trappers in the old West.Now you are educated!

Oh I knew that Carl and the native Indians only killed them when they needed to and used most everything from a kill to survive.
