Agreed. Greg, you know more about how to fix boot issues and do installations than I will probably ever know. I have learned a bit from you, but I have a long way to go in those two areas.

Like many others I tend to paint with a broader brush.

Shawn with his tutorials, Greg with his knowledge on startup and partitioning issues, the experts who unravel the BSOD threads all have my admiration and deserve all the kudos they get.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, my progress since I joined nearly a year ago has been helped by the wealth of knowledge in these forums, so it could be argued that in some small way we all help each other.

Without you I couldn't have achieved what I have and for that I thank you all.

I'm over repped :) I don't even often visit the threads you work on, except to see the impressive work some are doing. I don't have those skills. I try to find something I know, or can google for a fix. I wouldn't dare offer advice when I am not 100% certain I know of which I speak.

I believe if you are well liked, and friendly, you tend to get rep for what help you do provide. I don't mean it's undeserving, it's just not the high level some work at. People see you post something helpful, and they rep you. They don't (I think/hope) rep just anything they see by you just to rep you.

If you constantly provide high level help, you don't get the rep you deserve because it is what you do every day. If you are mostly too busy during the week, and can only really help 1 or 2 days, then your help catches peoples eyes. It's a strange dichotomy.

If one was to consider any help that is useful to the OP as deserving of "praise", then it is all good. If however, there is any animosity, or condescension because someone has a lot of rep, but doesn't "really help", then that is sad. Surely you don't get a lot of rep just because you are social, there must be something that was rep-able, even if just in the rep givers eyes.

Do I deserve to have more medals then some who work on the hard threads every day? Not in my own opinion. But at the same time I don't think a great deal of the rep was completely undeserved, but rather that some are under repped.

I am always happy to see rep, it is a sign that someone appreciated something I posted. It doesn't get you into any extra areas, or give you special privileges, so there is no harm. Once you have a medal, then two, then more rep is nice, but I hope it doesn't define someone. Just as a lack of same shouldn't.

People aren't stupid, they know who the "Stars" are here. Respect and admiration is earned always, whether it is finding a program for an OP, helping an OP with an answer that "everyone knows", or solving a heinous BSOD problem.

I'm sure admins see who is getting repped, and if they thought it undeserved, it wouldn't continue. But except for having a "weighted rep" system (what a nightmare to administer!), then rep for a simple answer, and rep for a 2 day marathon fix will show the same, but will never be equal. A (long winded) Guy :)

People like Jan (JMH) and Ken (zigzag3143) work hard in the BSOD section. I'm not really high ranked nor am I much of a guru but I tend to post in the Crashes and Debugging forum. I used to post in all types of different threads until I started to analyse dump files. Since then I've just been helping out with the BSOD threads. There's so much work in that forum that it's hard to actually post anywhere else.

Well I most definitely was not thinking of you Bill when I puzzled over how I cannot remember many threads which some with astronomical rep have helped in. Your help is superb and even though it's in another section I come across it regularly.

Jaidyn I know how you feel about a sub-forum requiring all of your time as I once could move in and out of Install, General, Performance, Updates and Backup - but now can struggle for hours to get out of Install to General.

I know how you feel. I think I started more in the hardware threads in the beginning and gravitated to the crashes and debugging forum. Hard disks are more my expertise than anything else; I have a mechanical engineering background. Now I have a hard time getting away from crashes and debugging. There is such a fast turn around that it is almost addictive.

I am glad I am not alone in this perspective. :D

I think I also share my view on this point. As far as I can see, I am in the top ten rep achievers onboard. I also see that I have more rep points than those persons who are much much more knowledgeable than me. Sometimes i also think like Bill that I am ovrreped.

I have earned a huge rep , by making sigs. All the times i cannot browse through all the threads, coz of photoshopping, still, I try to put something in the installation threads, when Greg and Ray are offline, lol. I also support in the resource replacement related issues, when Jerry is offline.

So thus I have earned all those. Most probably I really dont deserve it.

You know Arc, I always see good help from you. And you support Seven Forums. I think, like any community, we all do what we can, in our own ways. We can recognize that some do the harder work, but it is everyone's contributions, as a whole, that make up Seven Forums. Bottom line is most people get the help they need, and that's what it's all about. I am of the opinion that if you can have a little fun, and make some friends along the way, then it is an even better forum. A Guy

Well put Bill and Archie. I feel good when a suggestion of mine actually fixes something, it happened once, I think. Rep or not, it is fun to interact with people and provide some help. My fav is one where an OP was having serious issues with a laptop, so I finally asked if the thing was plugged in. You can guess "The Rest of The Story".

Hi Wolfgang - When JK was trying to entice me into BSOD threads I spent some time there looking around and got to know the crew a little more. Ultimately I decided to stick with the work I knew the best because I also don't enjoy that work as much. But I've grown to really respect the talent involved and often refer to it as "where the geniuses reside."

Now that I think about it, those Gurus surely deserve more rep than what I see them earning.

I hope I'm not stepping on any toes here. I only want to see hard work rewarded fairly. From what I've seen John has really tried to assure this. It's my own personal experience and I hope everyone else's.

Agree, Also see people with lot's of rep that I haven't seen before, just figured they spend their time in other SF forums.

The members in Crashes & Debugging work hard and, in my opinion deserve more rep than they get. This is due mostly to the hit and run new members and new members with low rep power.
It's interesting work that sometimes calls for investigative skills and lucky guesses ;)

We all help in different areas and due to time constraints, different levels of post count. The best thing is that we are helping and learning.

i'm one of the over-repped too, having got a fair chunk of it when you could get 200+ points in a morning for making a silly joke.

i probably don't rep enough either, especially for the difficult BSOD threads. I don't rep there because i never read there, so am unaware of all the hard work that goes on, because i've learned to try to only contribute to threads where i'm sure i know what i'm talking about (but still sometimes get it wrong!). life's too short to read every thread on the forum, so i'm highly selective and mainly jump in the fresh easy ones without a lot of replies.

slightly off-topic, and definitely not aimed at anyone, i'm not sure about rep being given to signature graphic makers. this is a tech-support forum, and members should be rewarded for helping solve computer problems, and not for their photoshop skills!

Well, I personally disagree. It is a PC help forum, but there is a dedicated customization forum. The GFX team is helping fellow members, and are creating original artwork for us. They don't do it just to get repped, and if the admins didn't think it worthy, there would be no rep in that section. I think anyone who regularly supports the forum is eligible, and deserves rep. IMHO. A Guy

yes, customising the os/gui is enhancing the computer experience - but making a signature is a different thing all together - how does making a sig for somebody count as 'PC help'?

I agree, it is civil discussion. It is just opinions, the Admins set the rules, and they seem to agree. I'll bow out now as this is the Ruputation and Badges thread, and we are semi hijacking it :)

How does making 2,000 posts in the Chill Room warrant

What's wrong in chillout :D ? Those posts are posts , after all . We know those are not valued .... coz one cannot have any rep for posting there.

BTW, I dont play word games there due to my lack of vocabulary .... not that I dont like those threads :p

Take it lightly, as I am, Mike :geek:  (shortly I will reach 10,000 .... you know where my pain is ;) ).

Interesting arguments, that's for sure.

When I joined these forums I did so with the intention of trying to help others and increase my own knowledge of Windows 7.

The fact that I've been able to do both is testament to the good people on here who give of their valuable time so freely.

Personally, as far as rep goes, I can take it or leave it. It's nice to be recognised, but I think it's even nicer when you know you've helped someone.

Nobody forces us to take part in these forums, we do it of our own free will and if the rep system were to be scrapped, I'd still carry on.

It is my observation that the rep system is a bit like the lottery. Sometimes you get a lot of reps for an insignificant one liner and at other times you get nothing for several days of hard work.

There seem to also be high times for reps when they are coming in like swarms of birds in the spring and at other times there is the great drought for days on end although you are doing exactly the same job as always.

I think the rep system is a nice touch, but we should not overrate it. I am happy when I could help solve a problem and when the OP says 'Thank you'. I don't think anybody here does spend his time in order to gain fame. The best part is anyhow that we as helpers probably learn the most from our activities - at least that is true for me.

If you want to find out the true value of rep....tell a co-worker about it;)
